Report: Liverpool unlikely to clinch title at Anfield

Liverpool may be denied the chance to clinch the Premier League title at home because of fears that people will congregate outside of Anfield and create a health emergency, according to The Times' Matt Lawton and Martyn Ziegler.

Authorities have reportedly identified 12 high-risk matches that could compel fans to gather in groups and therefore violate social distancing guidelines. Liverpool's matches at Manchester City and Everton, along with their remaining four home games, are included in that list.

The Reds need just six points to capture their first top-flight title in 30 years. They were 25 points clear atop the Premier League table when play was suspended in March.

Police insist they're not targeting Liverpool fans in particular, stressing that any potential gathering around Anfield - which is based in a residential area - could promote the spread of the coronavirus.

Around 2,000 new infections are still being reported in the U.K. on a daily basis.

London derbies and select Championship matches could also be moved to neutral venues. U.K. prime minister Boris Johnson said Thursday that outdoor gatherings of up to six people will be permitted next week as part of the government's plan to reopen the country. People must remain two meters apart.

The Premier League is set to return June 17 with games between City and Arsenal, and Sheffield United and Aston Villa.
