D.C. United's ongoing public attempt to sign Wayne Rooney seems to be progressing as manager Ben Olsen expressed his optimism that a deal to sign the Everton attacker will eventually "get over the line."
The former England captain was reportedly in the United States last week to hold talks with the Major League Soccer club's officials after receiving Everton's permission.
Reports suggest the 32-year-old has been offered a contract until 2020, and Olsen believes the attraction is mutual.
"There is interest in Wayne Rooney from our end and I think there is interest from his end too,'' Olsen said, according to the Press Association, after Saturday's 1-1 draw at Los Angeles FC. "I hope it can get over the line because he's a very good player who can help us. He would be a great player for this league.''
Olsen added: "Nothing is done, so I don't want to get into talk of arrival until he actually arrives.
"Nothing is ever done in this world and when you're looking at a deal of this scope and size. We'll see, but hopefully we can get it done.''
Rooney - Manchester United's record goalscorer - returned to his boyhood club last summer and finished the season as Everton's top marksman with 11 goals in 40 appearances across all competitions.
