Gylfi Sigurdsson's hopes of featuring for Iceland in the country's first-ever World Cup could be over, as the Everton midfielder is in danger of missing the rest of the season because of a knee injury.
The 28-year-old is scheduled to see a specialist Monday to reveal the extent of the problem and to address concerns over his availability for the remainder of the season.
It's unclear when he suffered the injury, as Sigurdsson featured for the entirety of Everton's 2-0 win over Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday.
A club-issued statement confirmed his meeting with the specialist and suggested Sigurdsson will miss "several weeks":
It is anticipated that the 28-year-old Icelandic international could be sidelined for several weeks but it will only be after consulting with the specialist that a definitive timeframe will be known.
His brother, Olafur Mar Sigurdsson, told Icelandic media that the midfielder damaged the joint in his right knee, according to the Press Association. If the injury is that severe, it could end his season, as well as his hopes of representing Iceland at the World Cup.
The 28-year-old arrived at Everton last summer after the Merseyside outfit spent a club-record £45 million to procure his services from Swansea City.
He played an integral role in Iceland's surprising success at Euro 2016 in France before helping the small nation qualify for this summer's World Cup in Russia.
