Scheffler arrested before Round 2 of PGA Championship

Police arrested Scottie Scheffler on Friday morning as the World No. 1 tried to enter Valhalla Golf Club for Day 2 of the PGA Championship.

A fatal accident earlier Friday on the road to Valhalla backed up traffic near the entrance to the course, according to ESPN's Jeff Darlington. Scheffler tried bypassing the traffic and drove past a police officer, who ordered the 27-year-old to stop and then attempted to "attach himself to Scheffler's car," Darlington adds.

The officer reportedly started screaming at Scheffler to exit the vehicle after he stopped his car. Once he complied, police handcuffed the golfer, per Darlington.

After a brief period in the back of a squad car, Scheffler was taken to the local police station and booked for the incident. Police charged Scheffler with second-degree assault of an officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic.

Scheffler was driving in eastbound lanes before switching to the westbound lanes to avoid the traffic, according to a police report obtained by Michael Eaves of ESPN. Police said an officer attempted to give Scheffler directions but was knocked down when Scheffler accelerated his vehicle.

The report adds the officer went to the hospital for treatment after suffering "pain, swelling, and abrasions to his left wrist and knee."

Scheffler was released from custody and returned to Valhalla at 9:12 a.m. He was initially scheduled to go off the 10th tee at 8:48 a.m., but poor weather pushed that back to 10:08 a.m - a move that also allowed him to make his tee time.

Shortly before making his way to the tee, Scheffler released a statement on Instagram giving his side of the story.
