Rahm breaks Royal Liverpool Open scoring record with remarkable 63
Jon Rahm grabbed a piece of Royal Liverpool history Saturday.
The World No. 3 fired the lowest-ever round at the course for the Open Championship with a remarkable 8-under 63.
Rahm surpasses previous Claret Jug winners at the iconic layout such as Walter Hagen, Bobby Jones, Peter Thomson, Tiger Woods, and Rory McIlroy. None of those men shot better than a 65 during their appearances.
The Spaniard began the day with just two birdies over his opening nine holes to sit 10 shots off the pace. However, he recorded five birdies from Holes 10 through 16.
Rahm capped his day with yet another birdie on the 18th for his lowest-ever score in a major championship. As a result, he skyrocketed 37 spots up the leaderboard into second place before leader Brian Harman took the course.
"That's the best round I've played on a links golf course ever," Rahm told reporters afterward. "It's my lowest round on a links course, and it's an Open Championship, right? Also, the lowest round shot on this course. It feels really good, but it's a lot of work to do tomorrow."
If Rahm can keep his charge going Sunday and take The Open, he'd become the first since 1920 to erase at least a 12-shot deficit through 36 holes to win a major, according to Justin Ray of the Twenty First Group.
