Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has undergone surgery to repair ligaments in his right knee, the club has confirmed.

"The Liverpool defender’s planned operation took place in London and was conducted successfully," read a statement on the team's website.

"Van Dijk will now immediately focus on the beginning of his rehabilitation with the support of the Reds’ medical department."

Liverpool added there is still no timetable for the Dutch international's return to Jurgen Klopp's team.

However, it's understood that Van Dijk - the PFA Players' Player of the Year in 2018-19 - will miss the remainder of the season.

The 29-year-old suffered the injury during the Merseyside derby earlier in October after he was on the wrong end of Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford's dangerous tackle.
