Canada's Buchanan has surgery on fractured tibia
Tajon Buchanan underwent successful surgery Wednesday to repair a fractured tibia, Canada Soccer announced.
A timeline for his recovery wasn't provided.
The 25-year-old sustained the injury during a training session Tuesday ahead of Canada's Copa America quarterfinal match. The session was canceled as the Inter Milan midfielder was taken to hospital by ambulance.
Canadian players and coaches visited Buchanan in the Dallas-area hospital, according to Matthew Scianitti of TSN. Head coach Jesse Marsch expects that he'll be back at the team hotel Thursday before Canada's quarterfinal clash with Venezuela on Friday in Arlington, Texas, per Scianitti.
Buchanan will travel with the squad if Canada wins that game and advances to the semifinals of the tournament, Scianitti adds.
"The way the guys support him, there were so many of us at the hospital yesterday, which says a lot about the unity of this group and how much they love and care for each other," Marsch told TSN on Wednesday.
Striker Cyle Larin, a former club teammate of Buchanan when the two were at Belgian side Club Brugge, said the injury will provide "extra motivation" for Canada to progress to the next stage in its first Copa America appearance.
"This will be for him," Larin said.
