Champions League draw, Group E: Barcelona given favourable draw ahead of title defence

The path is set for Barcelona and its journey to capture an unprecedented second straight Champions League title.

Although the Catalans avoided the Group of Death, they certainly won't have an easy journey out of the group stage after getting lumped into a faction that offers its fair share of obstacles.

Roma and Bayer Leverkusen pose the biggest threat to Barca's chances, but the lethal triumvirate leading the Barcelona attack will continue to torment opponents, with Lionel Messi adding to his record-breaking goal total in the tournament.

Barca's cast of superstars have the knowledge and experience to come away from the group stage with a perfect record. Underestimating its opponents may be the only thing that could hinder the club from running away with the group.

The battle to finish behind Barcelona will be the race that captures the most attention, as Roma and Bayer Leverkusen vie for the chance to improve on last season's performances.

Bayer enjoyed a successful run before getting knocked out in the Round of 16, while Roma aims to avenge its narrow elimination during the group stages.

While both teams will hope to come out of their matches with Barcelona with at least a point, they'll both be aware of the immense importance of going head to head. The results of Roma and Bayer's matches against one another will likely determine who finishes behind Barca.

Unfortunately for BATE, all signs point to another short appearance on Europe's biggest stage. It would be an absolute shocker if the Belarusian side finished above its three opponents. So, thanks for coming out, BATE.

Predicted Finish

  1. Barcelona
  2. Roma
  3. Bayer Leverkusen
  4. BATE
