Premier League players dominate FIFPro's World XI shortlist

FIFPro released its 2019 World XI shortlist on Thursday, and the Premier League has replaced La Liga as the annual list's most represented league.

It marks the first time since 2009 that the Premier League has received the most nominations, as 21 of the 55 players hail from teams in England's top flight.

La Liga boasted the highest number of players on the shortlist in each of the previous nine years and came one player short of matching the Premier League this year.

Of the five Premier League teams with players nominated, Liverpool and Manchester City are tied for the most with seven each. Barcelona and Real Madrid are the best-represented clubs overall with nine and eight players, respectively.

The nominees were chosen based on performances between July 2018 and July 2019 and were selected after 23,000 players from around the world voted for their best team.

2019's shortlist represents the first time in 15 years that Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon did not make the cut, while his Juventus teammate Cristiano Ronaldo is the only player to be selected on all 15 World 11 shortlists.
