Knowing a win would guarantee promotion, Ingolstadt, who were only founded in 2004, drew level when Mathew Leckie converted a penalty in first-half stoppage time. Stefan Lex then scored in the 76th minute, triggering wild celebrations from the home supporters at Audi Sportpark.
The final matchday of the 2. Bundesliga season will see SV Darmstadt 98, Karlsruher SC and 1. FC Kaiserslautern battle it out for the second automatic promotion.
