Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany collapsed during a training session Friday and was taken to a hospital, the Bundesliga team announced.

Kompany, who was overseeing a training session for Bayern Munich's reserve team when the incident occurred, will undergo further examination and remain in medical care.

His coaching staff will take charge of training and matchday preparation until Kompany's able to return.

"Vincent Kompany's health is our top priority," Bayern director of sport Max Eberl said. "We at FC Bayern will do everything we can to ensure he makes a speedy recovery.

"Vinnie is receiving all the necessary medical care and support, and all the time he needs. His coaching team, in whom we have complete confidence, will take over his duties. All of us at FC Bayern wish Vinnie a speedy recovery."

The former Manchester City captain had previously been dealing with a viral infection that affected his legs.

The 40-year-old was originally considered doubtful for Bayern's Champions League match against Arsenal on Wednesday, but he managed to return to the touchline for the 2-2 draw in Munich.
