But let's evaluate some of Flagg's potential challengers.</p><p>Dylan Harper has longer odds (+1200) than a typical second overall pick. He joins a Spurs squad with an exciting young core that's ready to emerge as a playoff team for the first time since 2019. Harper's a lethal scorer and downhill driver, but San Antonio has a crowded backcourt with De'Aaron Fox and reigning Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle. Plus, Victor Wembanyama has surpassed expectations, becoming one of the NBA's best players in his second season. He'll demand even more touches as he expands his offensive arsenal.</p><p>While Harper is a monumental part of the Spurs' future, his environment doesn't require him to take over. He won't have as much of an opportunity as Flagg to record eye-popping stat lines, which could weaken his Rookie of the Year case.</p><p>Similarly, VJ Edgecombe (+2500), the Sixers' third overall pick, will play a spot-up role alongside established stars Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and Paul George. He was drafted for his defense and ungodly athleticism, and it's unlikely he'll outshine some of the other rookies.</p><p>On the other hand, Harper's Rutgers co-star Ace Bailey (+650) is entering a completely different situation than his former teammate. Bailey was widely considered the third-best prospect in the draft, but he fell to the Jazz at No. 5 because of how he handled his predraft process. He refused all workouts and made it known he wanted nothing to do with certain organizations, including Utah. However, the Jazz didn't care, and they drafted him based on his talent and upside.</p><p>Bailey will have plenty of chances to showcase his skills on a struggling team without many hopeful long-term prospects. He averaged 17.6 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks during his lone season at Rutgers. While he'll take time to adjust to the NBA and must become a more efficient player, his statistical outputs should make headlines as Utah continues to pile up losses.</p><p>Tre Johnson (+750) will have the ball a ton for the Wizards in a lead guard role. He's a dynamic player who scores off the bounce and the catch. Washington has solid young pieces, but it desperately needs a star to take it back to the playoffs. Johnson can be that guy, and he'll have every opportunity to prove that in his first season. I'd expect him to be a finalist for Rookie of the Year.</p><p>Kon Knueppel and Jeremiah Fears, the No. 4 and No. 7 picks, were drafted by teams that expect them to play complementary roles. But there's one player who could really shock people with a Rookie of the Year win: Demin.</p><p>The Nets selected Demin eighth overall, although he was projected to go much later in the lottery. While many considered Brooklyn's pick a reach, Demin will have full rein offensively. The Nets had five first-round picks, four of which they used on guards. However, none are as talented as Demin, who was a polarizing prospect because of his shooting struggles (27% from three and 69% from the free-throw line).</p><p>A 6-foot-9 point guard with tremendous playmaking abilities, he's a good driver and finishes well at the rim by absorbing contact and using his footwork. He's the best passer in the draft, so Brooklyn will use Demin as a pick-and-roll ball-handler frequently. Despite his poor shooting numbers, he never lost confidence and reportedly shot well during workouts. Demin has All-Star potential if he can become a respectable 3-point shooter. The Wizards are the earliest he's likely to go, and their scouts frequently took the short drive to College Park to watch him.</p><p>Additionally, Troy Weaver left the Wizards' front office for a larger role with the <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/teams/24" href="https://thescore.com/nba/teams/24">Pelicans</a>, who own the seventh pick, earlier this offseason. Weaver attended many Maryland practices and games, so he's also familiar with Queen. He doesn't need the ball in his hands to contribute, the archetype Toronto should target.</p><h3>Richardson under 19.5 (+180)</h3><p><a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///ncaab/players/163573" href="https://thescore.com/ncaab/players/163573">Jase Richardson</a> didn't earn a green room invite, while 24 other players did. He won't be drafted in the lottery, but there aren't 24 other prospects better than Richardson. He was one of the most efficient pick-and-roll ball-handlers in the nation during his lone collegiate season and drastically improved offensively as the year progressed. He shot 41% from three and can play on and off the ball.</p><p>However, Richardson's height raises concerns about his potential liability defensively. His stock has lowered throughout the draft process, leading to some mocks projecting him to fall in the 20s. Whoever selects Richardson knows they aren't getting a star, but would 20 teams pass on an immediate impact player?</p><h3>Kalkbrenner selected in 1st round (-150)</h3><p>Nearly every credible mock draft has the <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/teams/1" href="https://thescore.com/nba/teams/1">Celtics</a> (28th pick) or the <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/teams/19" href="https://thescore.com/nba/teams/19">Suns</a> (29th) selecting <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///ncaab/players/85101" href="https://thescore.com/ncaab/players/85101">Ryan Kalkbrenner</a>. The <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///ncaab/teams/287" href="https://thescore.com/ncaab/teams/287">Creighton</a> big is a prototypical rim-running and rim-protecting big. He's not particularly athletic, but his 7-foot-1 frame makes him one of the best rim-protectors in the draft. He averaged over 2.5 blocks the last two seasons.</p><p>Kalkbrenner lacks guard skills and was exposed while defending on the perimeter. However, he serves his role well as a fundamentally sound big. An influx of player movement this summer could shake up the board. We've already seen the <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/345" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/345">Kevin Durant</a> and <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/93901" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/93901">Desmond Bane</a> trades dramatically shift the odds for the<a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/teams/22" href="https://thescore.com/nba/teams/22"> Rockets</a> (from +1800 to +850) and <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/teams/14" href="https://thescore.com/nba/teams/14">Magic</a> (from +4000 to +1500).</p><p>Then, there's the <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/30611" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/30611">Giannis Antetokounmpo</a> factor. He's signaled that he's more likely to stay with the <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/teams/10" href="https://thescore.com/nba/teams/10">Bucks</a> than ask to leave, but teams will be circling like sharks if he does become available. That would likely lead to an odds jump for the team that lands Antetokounmpo. </p><p>Heading into Game 7 of the NBA Finals, the <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/teams/9" href="https://thescore.com/nba/teams/9">Pacers</a> had the second-best odds to win next year's title at +850. Then cruelty struck. Indiana's improbable and inspiring run ended in the most devastating way possible when <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/93893" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/93893">Tyrese Haliburton</a> injured his Achilles in the opening quarter. There's a chance he'll miss all of next season. The Pacers fell to +4000 after the injury occurred.</p><p>The <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/teams/1" href="https://thescore.com/nba/teams/1">Celtics</a> are also further down the oddsboard because of an Achilles injury to <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/52651" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/52651">Jayson Tatum</a>, who will presumably miss next season. It's almost impossible to imagine the Pacers or Celtics, the latter of whom are expected to move some key starters, competing for a championship without their best players.</p><p>That leaves the East wide open. The <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/teams/7" href="https://thescore.com/nba/teams/7">Cavaliers</a> and <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/teams/3" href="https://thescore.com/nba/teams/3">Knicks</a> have shorter championship odds now than before Haliburton's injury. The Cavaliers won 64 regular-season games before bowing out in the second round, while the Knicks made their first conference finals in 25 years. And the Cavaliers' and Knicks' cores should look fairly similar next season.</p><p>The <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/teams/14" href="https://thescore.com/nba/teams/14">Magic</a>, <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/teams/4" href="https://thescore.com/nba/teams/4">76ers</a>, and even the <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/teams/8" href="https://thescore.com/nba/teams/8">Pistons</a> could all compete in a weakened Eastern Conference. Philadelphia is in win-now mode, and Orlando went all-in by trading for Bane.</p><p>The West is significantly more crowded and competitive than the East. The Rockets have the second-best odds after the Thunder now that a future Hall of Famer in Durant has joined the squad. The <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/teams/18" href="https://thescore.com/nba/teams/18">Lakers</a> have the next-best odds despite important offseason decisions lurking. The <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/teams/26" href="https://thescore.com/nba/teams/26">Nuggets</a> will always be in the mix with the NBA's best player, <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/37604" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/37604">Nikola Jokic</a>, and the <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/teams/27" href="https://thescore.com/nba/teams/27">Timberwolves</a> recently capped off back-to-back Western Conference finals appearances. He's the perfect fluid scorer to add to a team that earned the 2-seed in the West despite not owning a top-10 offense.</p><p>Before the trade, the Rockets were +1800 to win next season's title, tied for the eighth-best odds. Following the deal, Houston jumped to +850, the second-best title odds behind the Thunder (+220).</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Houston acquired the 15-time All-Star without sacrificing young pieces such as <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/96113" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/96113">Alperen Sengun</a>, <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/110271" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/110271">Amen Thompson</a>, <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/102780" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/102780">Tari Eason</a>, <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/110270" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/110270">Cam Whitmore</a>, or <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/121682" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/121682">Reed Sheppard</a>. While Green led the team in scoring, serious questions persisted about his inconsistency and inefficiency. Those concerns heightened when he had a poor playoff debut, averaging 13 points on 37% shooting from the field in Houston's first-round loss to the <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/teams/16" href="https://thescore.com/nba/teams/16">Warriors</a>.</p><p>While the Rockets had a top-five defense, their offense struggled to generate buckets in the clutch without a reliable go-to option. Their clutch offensive and net ratings ranked in the league's bottom half. Durant, who's on an expiring contract but eligible to sign a two-year extension with Houston, patches up that problem seamlessly as one of the most efficient pure scorers in league history.</p><p>The Durant experiment in Phoenix was a colossal failure. The Suns traded <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/37879" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/37879">Mikal Bridges</a>, <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/37658" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/37658">Cam Johnson</a>, four first-round picks, and other pieces to the Nets for Durant during the 2022-23 season. Phoenix won one playoff series over the following three seasons and missed the postseason entirely this year. But Durant doesn't deserve all the blame. The Suns were 33-29 with Durant this campaign and 3-17 without him.</p><p>Phoenix had little leverage in the trade discussions as both sides were desperate to cut ties. Still, the Suns received a poor haul considering what they surrendered to acquire him over two years ago.</p><p>The Rockets impressed throughout the regular season but lacked the experience to make a deep postseason run. The <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/teams/9" href="https://thescore.com/nba/teams/9">Pacers</a> outscored the Thunder by 27 in the second and third quarters combined. Indiana's defense held Oklahoma City to a playoff-low 91 points and 26% shooting from three. <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/60411" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/60411">Shai Gilgeous-Alexander</a> scored a series-low 21 points.</p><p>The Thunder rarely turn the ball over and they force turnovers at a high rate, often turning defense into offense. The Pacers flipped the script on them in Game 6, committing 10 turnovers to the Thunder's 21. OKC's half-court offense was already in shambles, and it couldn't generate points off turnovers either. It was an uncharacteristic performance on both ends by the Thunder.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>That brings us to the two best words in sports: Game 7. Sunday's concluding game of the NBA season will be the first Finals Game 7 since the <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/teams/7" href="https://thescore.com/nba/teams/7">Cavaliers</a> upset the <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/teams/16" href="https://thescore.com/nba/teams/16">Warriors</a> in 2016.</p><p>The Thunder opened as 8.5-point home favorites over the Pacers on theScore Bet/ESPN Bet, the largest NBA Finals Game 7 spread since at least 1991, per <a href="https://x.com/DavidPurdum/status/1936063582711558550">ESPN</a>, but that dropped to 7.5 Friday morning. OKC is -325 on the moneyline while Indiana is +260. <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/93893" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/93893">Tyrese Haliburton</a>'s calf injury was a prominent storyline entering Game 6, but it didn't appear to bother him. Plus, he only played 23 minutes Thursday because Indiana blew Oklahoma City out.</p><p>The home team has won 15 of the last 19 NBA Finals Game 7s, including six of the last seven. Oklahoma City will provide an electric atmosphere Sunday night. A trend working in the Pacers' favor is that the winner of the last three Game 7s on this stage - Cavs in 2016, <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/teams/13" href="https://thescore.com/nba/teams/13">Heat</a> in 2013, and <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/teams/18" href="https://thescore.com/nba/teams/18">Lakers</a> in 2010 - trailed 3-2 entering Game 6 and won two straight to capture the title.</p><p>Can the Pacers pull off another monumental upset as huge underdogs?</p><p>Even if the Thunder emerge victorious, the Pacers pushing the series to a Game 7 is a shocking result. Oklahoma City entered the series as a -700 favorite - the largest finals favorite since the 2018 Warriors, who swept the Cavaliers. And if the Pacers upset the Thunder on their home floor? A Pacers win would be the biggest upset in NBA Finals history since the <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/teams/8" href="https://thescore.com/nba/teams/8">Pistons</a> defeated the <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/teams/18" href="https://thescore.com/nba/teams/18">Lakers</a> in 2004 as +500 underdogs, the same price at which Indiana entered these Finals.</p><p>The Pacers are no strangers to this spot. Indiana was an underdog entering its last three playoff series and has been an underdog of five points or more in every Finals game despite winning half of them. Oddsmakers have been dead wrong about how competitive this series would be, and Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle is aware of those spreads.</p><p>"We're gonna be an underdog in every game this series," Carlisle told reporters before Game 4, according to <a href="https://sports.yahoo.com/article/pacers-rick-carlisle-clearly-using-212924771.html?guccounter=1">Yahoo Sports' Zachary Howell</a>. "It was 10.5 in the first two games, 5.5 last night. ... Anything less than a total grit mindset, we just don't have a chance."</p><p>Their unbreakable spirit has improbably led them to 15 playoff wins. He got to his spot on the left elbow, used footwork to create space, and drilled a fadeaway mid-range jumper to reach a playoff career-high 40 points in the most important game of his career.</p><p>Gilgeous-Alexander, who still scored 31 points, took a rare back seat to his co-star. Williams' sensational Finals performance has come at a critical juncture, not only because it's basketball's biggest stage, but the Pacers have hounded SGA, at times wearing him out to the point of visible exhaustion.</p><p>The Thunder have adjusted by assigning Gilgeous-Alexander more off-ball reps as relief from initiating the offense against Indiana's full-court pressure. Many of those primary ball-handling opportunities have been transferred to Williams, who's averaging 25.8 points per game, 5.6 rebounds, and 4.2 assists in the Finals.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Could Williams, once an afterthought to capture Finals MVP even if the Thunder won, upstage SGA and become the youngest player to win the award since 22-year-old <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/4200" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/4200">Kawhi Leonard</a> in 2014? He willed the Thunder, who were on the brink of falling behind 3-1, to a comeback victory.</p><p>The Thunder's offensive operation hinges on Gilgeous-Alexander's brilliance. The three-time All-Star deserves to win the award, but that doesn't mean he will. Williams' emergence is driving headlines, and narratives often swing how the 11 Finals MVP voters, comprised of selected media members, cast their ballots.</p><p>Williams has overcome postseason demons to become an unstoppable force. After catapulting to the No. 1 seed last year, the Thunder gained playoff scars - as most eventual champions do - against the <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/teams/21" href="https://thescore.com/nba/teams/21">Mavericks</a> in the second round.</p><p>Gilgeous-Alexander was magnificent against Dallas, averaging an efficient 32 points and 7.3 assists. His supporting cast, including Williams, let him down. In his first playoff action, Williams averaged 17 points on 42% shooting and had multiple games with fewer than 15. But it's common for an emerging star to struggle with increased physicality and more detailed game plans in their postseason debut.</p><p>The same issues materialized in this year's second-round matchup against the <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/teams/26" href="https://thescore.com/nba/teams/26">Nuggets</a>. Williams finished with 10 points in Game 4 and six points in Game 6. He shot 37% from the field in the series. However, in Game 7, his 24 points and seven assists were vital as the Thunder overpowered the Nuggets. Since then, Williams has been on a dominant stretch.</p><p>The 12th pick in the 2022 draft has developed into a player with no flaws. He's excellent in spot-up roles and attacking closeouts. He has smart cutting instincts. He can flourish on the ball and has become a forceful driver who can finish on both sides with either hand. His combination of usage and production on a championship team is unprecedented for someone with such little experience.</p><p>He's carried a large offensive workload while remaining a tenacious defender, troubling <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/39061" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/39061">Pascal Siakam</a> throughout the Finals. His two-way ability could help his MVP candidacy. And although Williams' numbers trail Gilgeous-Alexander's, history says voters could snub the league MVP and give Williams the Bill Russell Trophy.</p><p>Voters have a propensity to reward the underdog instead of the best player when the opportunity presents itself. Andre Iguodala won the 2015 Finals MVP over <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/148" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/148">Steph Curry</a> despite the latter leading the team in scoring by a massive margin. Curry didn't play up to his standard, and Iguodala's defense on <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/72" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/72">LeBron James</a> swung the voters.</p><p>Last June, <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/45455" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/45455">Jaylen Brown</a> won Finals MVP despite <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/52651" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/52651">Jayson Tatum</a> leading the team in points, rebounds, and assists. Brown had some huge outings in the series as the Mavericks crowded Tatum's drives to get the ball out of his hands (similar to the Pacers' approach with Gilgeous-Alexander).</p><p>More recently, Siakam unjustly won the Eastern Conference finals MVP over <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/93893" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/93893">Tyrese Haliburton</a>. While Siakam registered more points, Haliburton averaged more assists and rebounds and was indisputably the Pacers' most important player. Siakam's three games with at least 30 points, including a 39-point showing in Game 2, put him over the edge in voters' minds.</p><p>Williams' moment may have come to the tune of 40 points in Game 5.</p><p>Granted, a Thunder player isn't destined to take the award until they win the series. They lead 3-2, with Game 6 coming in Indianapolis. Oklahoma City is a -2000 series favorite as Haliburton deals with a calf injury that has him questionable for Thursday.</p><p>If the Thunder clinch their first championship in franchise history, watch for voters to avoid presenting the honor to the team's best player. However, he was a massive disappointment, shooting 34.2% from three, his lowest mark since his rookie season, and averaging just 8.7 points per game. While it's presumed he'll eventually ask out of Milwaukee, he recently hinted that may not be the case.</p><p>If Antetokounmpo becomes available, the Rockets should pursue him over Durant and have a package that Milwaukee would be interested in. But if Houston pulls the trigger on a Durant trade, it'll lose key pieces needed for an Antetokounmpo deal. It's a tricky situation for the Rockets - and other interested parties - to navigate as the Suns are expected to move Durant before a potential Antetokounmpo trade.</p><p>The Timberwolves reportedly attempted to acquire Durant at the deadline and are interested in pairing him with his mentee, <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/93912" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/93912">Anthony Edwards</a>. For the Knicks, surrendering younger pieces for an expensive and aging Durant, who hasn't won a playoff series since 2023, would be irresponsible, considering they were two wins away from the NBA Finals.</p><p>The Durant sweepstakes are heating up as a trade will likely be finalized in June. And thus, Haliburton must play better for the Pacers to have a chance in this series.</p><p>He's averaging 15.5 points and six assists through two games, both of which would be his lowest averages in any playoff series of his career. Haliburton went under on his assist prop in both games and went under his points prop in Game 1. The All-NBAer had only five points through three quarters of Game 2 before a 12-point fourth quarter in a one-sided game cleared his Game 2 points prop. His Game 3 points prop is 17.5, and assist prop is 7.5.</p><p>While Haliburton's game-winner in Game 1 is the defining moment of the series so far, the smack-talking point guard has been lackluster offensively. He took only 13 shots in each game and hasn't attempted a free throw. Haliburton's aggression isn't only necessary for his scoring output, the Pacers struggle to generate clean looks without Haliburton's drive-and-kicks.</p><p>The Thunder's swarming defense deserves as much credit as Haliburton does blame. Oklahoma City has done an exceptional job of preventing dribble-drive penetration and limiting paint touches. The Thunder also apply aggressive ball pressure and have a higher pick-up point than the Pacers' previous opponents. He's typically great at punishing switches. </p><p>We can't mention the Pacers' offensive woes without acknowledging the Thunder's defensive tenacity. The Pacers often appear timid to throw post-entry passes to Siakam when he has a mismatch because of OKC's swarming defense that includes smaller defenders holding their own against post players.</p><p>Theoretically, the below image is the matchup the Pacers want with Siakam pinning <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/60411" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/60411">Shai Gilgeous-Alexander</a>. He was a finalist for the <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/teams/19" href="https://thescore.com/nba/teams/19">Suns</a>' job before they ultimately hired Cavs assistant Jordan Ott. Bryant's prior relationships with the Knicks' front office and star players - including <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/45223" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/45223">Jalen Brunson</a>, who publicly supported keeping Thibodeau - may draw him back to New York.</p><p>The Knicks could also opt for an experienced coach to guide them to a championship. Jason Kidd has been linked to New York and previously coached Brunson when he played in Dallas. The problem? Kidd is still under contract with the <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/teams/21" href="https://thescore.com/nba/teams/21">Mavericks</a>.</p><p>While the Knicks will seek permission to interview Kidd, the Mavs could deny the request. If he holds any animosity toward Dallas' unstable management and ownership over the move, Kidd may want to move on from the Mavericks despite them landing the No. 1 pick in the draft and generational prospect <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///ncaab/players/162169" href="https://thescore.com/ncaab/players/162169">Cooper Flagg</a>. If the Knicks want Kidd and he wants to leave for New York, all parties would likely facilitate the deal through a coaching trade, requiring the Knicks to gift the Mavs some compensation.</p><p>Jay Wright was an obvious candidate for the job as one of this generation's most successful basketball coaches. He coached title-winning <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///ncaab/teams/1145" href="https://thescore.com/ncaab/teams/1145">Villanova</a> teams that featured Brunson, <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/30695" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/30695">Josh Hart</a>, and <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/37879" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/37879">Mikal Bridges</a>. But Wright is out of the running after making it clear through a series of reports that he isn't interested in returning to coaching.</p><p>Then there's the group of head coaches who were - perhaps foolishly - fired this season. Michael Malone is the most successful, leading the Nuggets to an NBA championship in 2023 and sitting at the front of Denver's bench for 10 seasons. While he's undoubtedly a great coach, he shares some of the stubborn traits that likely led to Thibodeau's ouster, including refusing to play his bench.</p><p>Mike Budenholzer won a championship with the <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/teams/10" href="https://thescore.com/nba/teams/10">Bucks</a> in 2021 but has been fired by Milwaukee and Phoenix since. Mike Brown took the disastrous <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/teams/20" href="https://thescore.com/nba/teams/20">Kings</a> to the playoffs in 2023 for the first time in 17 seasons. Taylor Jenkins steered the <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/teams/23" href="https://thescore.com/nba/teams/23">Grizzlies</a> to the playoffs in four of the past five seasons. While down the oodsboard, Jenkins and Brown should at least warrant an interview.</p><p>Bryant, Malone, Budenholzer, and Jenkins are all represented by the agency CAA, where Knicks president of basketball operations Leon Rose was a powerhouse agent before moving to the Knicks' front office.</p><p>Jeff Van Gundy and Dan Hurley are wild-card candidates to consider, but both are long shots. At this point, the Knicks hiring anyone other than Bryant, Kidd, or Malone would be a surprise. <p>The <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/teams/11" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/teams/11">Steelers</a> finally got their guy - at least for this season - as <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/747" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/747">Aaron Rodgers</a> agreed to a one-year deal with Pittsburgh on Thursday, finalizing a long-rumored partnership.</p><p>Pittsburgh was +5000 (tied for the 17th-best odds) to win the Super Bowl and +2000 to win the AFC (eighth-best odds) before the Rodgers news broke, and it remained in the same position following the news. Two reasons explain the lack of movement. First, it wasn't exactly a secret that Rodgers would eventually sign with the Steelers, so his presence was already baked into the lines. Second, it's not clear how much a 41-year-old Rodgers moves the needle.</p><p>The Steelers did slightly increase their odds of winning the division from +550 to +500, but that still trails the <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/teams/12" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/teams/12">Ravens</a> (-140) and <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/teams/9" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/teams/9">Bengals</a> (+225). They also moved from +150 to +140 to make the playoffs, while their win total remains at 8.5. They're -165 to miss the playoffs, meaning they have a 62% implied probability not to qualify.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Rodgers is entering his 21st season, and the four-time MVP is certainly not the gunslinger he was in his prime. His last two seasons with the <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/teams/4" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/teams/4">Jets</a> were a disaster. In his first drive with the franchise in 2023, Rodgers tore his Achilles and missed the entire season. The former Packer then returned and had one of the worst seasons of his career. He was likely still hindered by the Achilles injury, both physically and mentally, and New York finished 5-12 and decided to move on.</p><p>Rodgers is certainly an upgrade over others in the Steelers' quarterback room, which features <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/83531" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/83531">Mason Rudolph</a> and rookie<a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/210204" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/210204"> Will Howard</a>, who Pittsburgh selected in the sixth round. But part of the reason the Steelers didn't draft a quarterback in the early rounds, or sign one earlier in free agency, was the strong possibility of landing Rodgers.</p><p>The optimists will point to the last few weeks of last year's regular season, when Rodgers threw for over 250 yards and completed at least 60% of his passes in four of his last five games. He also only threw three interceptions during that span. But he ultimately tossed 11 picks last season, the second-most interceptions he's thrown in a campaign since 2010. The result is that his passing yards prop for this fall is 3,200.5. He's thrown at least 3,600 yards in every year in which he played a full campaign.</p><p>It should be noted that the Super Bowl champion is heading to a stable organization with a rock-solid culture. The Steelers have never had a losing season in Mike Tomlin's 18 years as head coach, and they've made the playoffs eight of the last 11 years. However, while they've been good in recent seasons, they've failed to make the jump to great because of inconsistent and subpar quarterback play.</p><p>Since Ben Roethlisberger retired, the Steelers have started Rudolph, <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/173994" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/173994">Kenny Pickett</a>, <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/71696" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/71696">Mitch Trubisky</a>, <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/161671" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/161671">Justin Fields</a>, and <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/12258" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/12258">Russell Wilson</a>. Ultimately, none panned out, and Pittsburgh hasn't won a playoff game since 2016, dropping six straight postseason contests - the longest streak in the franchise's storied history. The Thunder's<strong> </strong>third-leading scorer<strong> </strong>is also primed for a monstrous series.</p><p><a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/102801" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/102801">Chet Holmgren</a> has averaged at least 18 points per game in two of OKC's three playoff series. While his series-long points prop isn't listed, his Game 1 prop is 17.5 points. His series-long rebounding prop is 8.5 boards per game. The Pacers are a below-average rebounding group. While Holmgren's rebounding numbers were down against the <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/teams/27" href="https://thescore.com/nba/teams/27">Timberwolves</a>' frontcourt, he averaged nearly 11 boards against the <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/teams/26" href="https://thescore.com/nba/teams/26">Nuggets</a> in the second round.</p><p>Gilgeous-Alexander and Williams will attract double teams and extra help from Indiana's defense. That could create an opportunity for OKC's others to score, including Holmgren. Williams averaged 22.2 points last series, the most he's ever averaged in a playoff matchup. Yet it still fell short of Siakam's average, who also averaged more than Williams in their respective second-round series.</p><p>The Pacers will run additional actions through Siakam as Haliburton flounders. Thus, we don't assign much of a possibility (neither do the oddsmakers) to any Pacers player winning Finals MVP. While Siakam averaged more points, Haliburton's passing and clutch performances should have won him the honor.</p><p>A similar scenario could play out against the <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/teams/28" href="https://thescore.com/nba/teams/28">Thunder</a>, as their aggressive ball pressure will hinder Haliburton's ability to create separation and waltz through the lane like he has in the previous three series. Oklahoma City has various resistant perimeter defenders who will cause trouble for Haliburton, including <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/70382" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/70382">Lu Dort</a>, <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/25024" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/25024">Alex Caruso</a>, and <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/110284" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/110284">Cason Wallace</a>, among others. Haliburton averaged 11 points and 5.5 assists in two games against the Thunder. His drives and paint touches were also way down in those matchups.</p><p>If the Pacers miraculously upset the Thunder, Siakam will be the driving force.</p><p>Nevertheless, the award is Gilgeous-Alexander's to lose, and he's probably not going to lose it. While the Thunder's historically great defense has carried them to the Finals, the league MVP is the offensive engine. He's averaging 29.8 points - roughly nine points more than <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/102799" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/102799">Jalen Williams</a> - and leads the team in assists during the postseason. The Thunder superstar has scored at least 30 points in 11 of his 16 playoff games. However, Gilgeous-Alexander's odds are way too short for any reasonable person to bet on him.</p><p>The path for another Thunder player to win MVP would be the Pacers throwing everything at Gilgeous-Alexander, constantly sending doubles (and even triples) his way and aggressively blitzing his ball screens, forcing the ball out of his hands and making room for a costar to have a huge series. Another path is for one Thunder defender to emerge as a dominant force, similar to how Andre Iguodala won Finals MVP over <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/148" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/148">Steph Curry</a> in 2015 as James' primary defender despite finishing as the Warriors' second-leading scorer.</p><p>Williams struggled early in the playoffs but has been an exceptional secondary scorer for the Thunder since Game 7 of the second round against the <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/teams/26" href="https://thescore.com/nba/teams/26">Nuggets</a>. He then averaged 22 points per contest on 46% 3-point shooting against the <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/teams/27" href="https://thescore.com/nba/teams/27">Timberwolves</a>. But the Pacers' defensive plan will focus on shutting down Williams along with Gilgeous-Alexander. The Thunder's other players must step up, and there's one who's been a huge part of OKC's run in just his second full season.</p><p><a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/102801" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/102801">Chet Holmgren</a>, who's coming off a productive Western Conference finals where he averaged 18 points and six boards, should overwhelm his matchups against Indiana. He didn't play in either regular-season contest, but Siakam and <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/37711" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/37711">Myles Turner</a> will primarily guard him. Siakam doesn't have the height to guard Holmgren, and Turner lacks the lateral quickness to stop his drives.</p><p>While <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/37817" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/37817">Karl-Anthony Towns</a> was criticized last series, he scored effortlessly by consistently driving past Turner and other Pacers defenders. Holmgren isn't the offensive talent Towns is, but he's capable of huge offensive outputs against questionable defenders. With the bulk of the defensive attention on Gilgeous-Alexander and Williams, Holmgren is primed for a prosperous Finals.</p><p>Plus, Holmgren is the Thunder's defensive anchor. <p>The <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/teams/28" href="https://thescore.com/nba/teams/28">Thunder</a> (-700) are the largest NBA Finals favorites since the 2018 <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/teams/16" href="https://thescore.com/nba/teams/16">Warriors</a>, who swept the <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/teams/7" href="https://thescore.com/nba/teams/7">Cavaliers</a>. And aside from those Warriors, only the Lakers in 2000, 2001, and 2002 had shorter odds to win the championship this century. The <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/teams/9" href="https://thescore.com/nba/teams/9">Pacers</a>, meanwhile, are +500 to upset Oklahoma City.</p><p>Indiana has overcome long odds throughout the season. It entered the campaign at +5000 to win the Finals and jumped to +10000 after a 10-15 start. The Pacers then knocked off the Cavaliers in the second round and the <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/teams/3" href="https://thescore.com/nba/teams/3">Knicks</a> in the conference finals as underdogs.</p><p>But improbable Finals runs often end unceremoniously. Let's dive into the Pacers' chances.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><h3>Do the Pacers have any chance?</h3><p>The Pacers are in the Finals because of their pace and depth, and those two things are correlated. Indiana's deep bench allows it to dictate a fast pace, recycling in replacement-level role players who adopt the same style. The Pacers successfully applied full-court pressure to the Knicks and ultimately won the battle of attrition.</p><p>But the Thunder can negate any advantage the Pacers have. The two squads do a bunch of the same things well; the Thunder just do them better. Depth is also a strength of OKC, who boast a deep roster that elevates a historically great defense. The Thunder's bench averages more minutes per game than the Pacers' bench.</p><p>Stylistically, this matchup pits a fast-paced, egalitarian offense against a dominant, aggressive defense. </p><p>The Pacers had success in previous series by attacking weak point-of-attack defenses. They constantly targeted vulnerable defenders like <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/45223" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/45223">Jalen Brunson</a> and<a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/37817" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/37817"> Karl-Anthony Towns</a>. That's not possible against the Thunder, who play no weak defenders.</p><p>Indiana's offense is predicated on <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/93893" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/93893">Tyrese Haliburton</a> gliding downhill, collapsing the defense, and putting defenders in rotation against a group that moves the ball and attacks closeouts better than anyone. The problem is the Pacers' free-flowing style hasn't met a team like the Thunder, who shut off drives with feisty ball pressure. The Thunder's defense moves on a string, rotating and recovering at a frightening level. <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/70382" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/70382">Lu Dort</a>, <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/102799" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/102799">Jalen Williams</a>, <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/110284" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/110284">Cason Wallace</a>, and <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/25024" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/25024">Alex Caruso </a>will all take turns making Haliburton's life as difficult as possible.</p><p>While the Pacers push the ball even after made shots, their transition attack is often catapulted by generating turnovers. The Knicks averaged over 15 turnovers in the Eastern Conference finals, leading to many opportunities for a team that scores a whopping 1.32 points per possession in transition.</p><p>Those leak-out chances won't exist against the Thunder, who have the NBA's best regular-season and playoff turnover rate. OKC limits opponent transition opportunities by rarely turning the ball over. It has allowed the second-fewest fast-break points this postseason.</p><p>Oklahoma City also forces turnovers at the league's highest rate and flourishes in transition. It led the NBA in points off turnovers and allowed the fewest points off turnovers. Whoever wins the turnover battle will win the series, and the Thunder have the edge.</p><p>While the Pacers have become synonymous with pace, the Thunder have actually played at a faster pace this postseason. The Thunder cherish possessions, creating an unsolvable formula for beating them.</p><p>The Pacers are shooting a playoff-best 40% from three this postseason. They lead the playoffs in wide-open 3-point frequency among teams that have played at least five playoff games, per <a href="https://www.nba.com/stats/teams/shots-closest-defender?CloseDefDistRange=6+%20Feet%20-%20Wide%20Open&amp;dir=D&amp;sort=FG3A_FREQUENCY">NBA Stats</a>, and have generated open threes by playing fast and driving-and-kicking. But they'll have difficulty creating open threes while the Thunder shut off drives.</p><p>At the other end of the court, the Thunder's offense hasn't reached its ceiling this postseason. It's shooting 33% from three, fourth worst among all playoff teams, after drilling 37% of its attempts during the regular season. OKC's offense should explode against a suspect Pacers defense that ranks in the bottom half in playoff defensive rating.</p><p>The Pacers' only chance to keep the series competitive is with more incredible clutch performances. Indiana has a 37.4 clutch net rating in the playoffs and is 7-1 in clutch games. However, the difference between these teams is so lopsided that most of these games won't make it into clutch territory.</p><p>Like other improbable Finals runs, the sun must set on a special season. Indiana's offense won't have answers for the Thunder's relentless ball pressure and swarming defense.</p><h3>How to bet a lopsided Finals</h3><p>As outlined, the Pacers can't win this series unless the Thunder are hit by catastrophic injuries. So how are we supposed to bet such a lopsided Finals?</p><p>It's not a matter of if the Thunder close out the Pacers; it's in how many games.</p><figure class="article-segment--table"><div class="table-responsive"><table>

Oklahoma City is also a young group without much championship DNA, meaning it's susceptible to letdowns.</p><p>That became evident in the opening round when the <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/teams/23" href="https://thescore.com/nba/teams/23">Grizzlies</a> led the Thunder by 29 in Game 3 with OKC up 2-0 in the series, although Oklahoma City eventually came back to win.</p><p>A similar scenario occurred in Game 3 of the Western Conference finals against the <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/teams/27" href="https://thescore.com/nba/teams/27">Timberwolves</a>. Oklahoma City took its foot off the gas with a 2-0 lead, and the more desperate team took advantage. Minnesota won by 42, its lone win of the series.</p><p>A repeat could happen in the Finals when the Thunder lead and the Pacers take advantage of a group that's starting to taste a championship.</p><p>While I've admittedly picked against the Pacers throughout the postseason (and looked like a fool because of it), it's hard to imagine them beating the Thunder more than once. The Thunder -2.5 series spread is an intriguing option, even at a juicier price of -130.
