Three-time US Open champion Novak Djokovic confirmed on Thursday that he'll take part in this year's tournament.

The world No. 1 made the announcement on his website, saying it was "not an easy decision to make with all the obstacles and challenges" presented by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

"I am aware that this time around it will be very different with all the protocols and safety measures that are put in place to protect players and people of NY," the Serbian said.

"Nevertheless, I have trained hard with my team and got my body in shape so I am ready to adapt to new conditions. I've done all the check-ups to make sure I am fully recovered and I am ready to get back on court fully committed to playing my best tennis."

Djokovic tested positive for COVID-19 in June after organizing and taking part in the highly criticized Adria Tour, an exhibition series that featured full crowds in Serbia and Croatia earlier this summer.

He returned to training last month after recovering from the disease.

The 33-year-old, who continues to chase down Roger Federer's record of 20 Grand Slam titles, will also take part in the Western & Southern Open, a tuneup tournament to be played at Flushing Meadows beginning Aug. 22.

The US Open is scheduled to start Aug. 31.

Several high-profile players, including Rafael Nadal and Ashleigh Barty, have already opted out of the competition over coronavirus concerns.
