Swiss countrymen Stan Wawrinka and Roger Federer shared a laugh Sunday after Federer won his fifth Indian Wells title, at Wawrinka's expense.
During Wawrinka's post-match comments, a smiling and laughing Federer was seated at his chair, and his vanquished opponent saw an opportunity to bury his friend, known as one of the nicest pro athletes sports has ever seen.
"I would like to congratulate Roger," Wawrinka said. "He's laughing. He's an asshole, but it's OK."
Federer joked that he was trying to cheer Wawrinka up, hence the smile. He also said he took Wawrinka's words as a compliment.
"On the court is the first time," Federer said of being called the expletive, "but it felt good."
When you're 35 and winning titles, everything feels good.
