On day of Correa's debut, Astros beef up farm system with trio of standout draft picks

It was a big day for the Houston Astros.

Club owners sat on the edge of their seats as they watched top prospect Carlos Correa graduate from the minors Monday in his debut for the big club. Fortunately, they saw their young stud beat out a grounder in the six-hole for his first MLB knock.

Meanwhile, they were also eyeing the draft, where they had three selections in the first round, including two of the top five.

As difficult as it is to select the No. 1 overall pick, the Astros were forced to pick second and fifth overall. With that, the club had to be meticulous with who they went with.

Instead of selecting a power arm in Carson Fulmer or a stellar southpaw in Tyler Jay, the Astros selected LSU shortstop Alex Bregman and high school outfielder Kyle Tucker.

Picking up Bregman was a no-brainer based on his ability, but a question mark given the club already has Correa. Behind Vanderbilt's Dansby Swanson, who went first overall, Bregman is easily the most polished infielder in the draft.

"I'm so excited," he said following his selection. "It's such an honor, especially to go to a great organization that's on the rise ... it's a dream come true."

Although there was some skepticism with whether or not he'll remain at shortstop, Astros director of Amateur Scouting Mike Elias said Bregman proved he deserves to be there.

"That's a question that was answered very emphatically," Elias said, saying that if he makes it to the bigs, they'll deal with it despite having Correa at the position.

But just when everyone thought the Astros were finished, they swooped in an picked up Daz Cameron, son of former major-leaguer Mike Cameron, with the 37th overall pick on day one.

Though he slid down the board, he's an exceptional addition to an already potent Astros farm system. Cameron possesses a unique combination of power, speed, and a stellar arm from the outfield.

He'll likely grow into a pro outfielder, just like his father, making the club a force to be reckoned with down the road.
