Updated list of available free agents, top names at each position

So you missed out on LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony. That's okay, the NBA's second tier of free agents was decent this summer; there were plenty of opportunities to take a step forward without nabbing a superstar.

But if you're still looking for help, and you have significant holes on your roster, well, things look bleak. The top players are long gone, the second and third tier have been picked over, and the names that are left, with a few exceptions, all come with warts.

It's been a busy couple of weeks, to say the least. As things start to slow down, what follows is a position-by-position update on who's signed, who's left, and who could still make an impact. Happy hunting.

Point Guard

Eric Bledsoe wants a maximum contract, and though the Phoenix Suns have offered their restricted free agent point guard a four-year, $48-million contract, that's apparently not cutting it. The Suns have plenty of leverage, having secured Isaiah Thomas via sign-and-trade to pair with Goran Dragic and first-round draft pick Tyler Ennis, so they don't need Bledsoe, and the market for the 24-year-old has been slow to heat up.

Any concerns are fair, as Bledsoe managed only 43 games this past season due to a torn meniscus. He also has but 78 games of starting experience, showing terrific flashes in those stretches but limiting the sample from which to judge him. The fact the Suns functioned as well offensively with or without him, despite his obvious talents, probably doesn't help either.

But this is a talented young player who averaged 17.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 5.5 assists with above-average efficiency metrics last season. Bledsoe has All-Star potential, and while a max extension may seem a stretch, several teams have the flexibility to make a play for him, especially if the Suns are willing to engage in a sign-and-trade.

Shooting Guard

Like Bledsoe, Evan Turner was a restricted free agent. Unlike Bledsoe, his previous employer doesn't seem all that interested in retaining him unless he comes at a significant discount. Outside of Indiana, the Boston Celtics and Minnesota Timberwolves are said to have some interest, but it's been all quiet on The Villain front for a week now.

The pause makes sense, up to a certain point. Turner, a former second-overall pick, has disappointed through four seasons, posting solid counting stats but at below-average efficiency and without much of a clue on the defensive end. He also fell out of favor quickly with the Pacers, where some incorrectly thought a better system may see him settle into a clearly defined support role.

Still, this is a 25-year-old capable of playing both wing positions and handling the ball, and one who averaged a tempo-inflated 17.4 points, six rebounds, and 3.7 assists in 54 games with Philadelphia this year. As the price falls, the potential profit here rises.

Small Forward

Shawn Marion may be 36 years old but few are as trustworthy on the defensive end as the unrestricted free agent out of UNLV.

To carve out the requisite cap space for other additions, the Dallas Mavericks renounced Marion's Bird rights, which means as much as they'd like to retain him, they can't go above the room mid-level exception (and a starting salary of just $2.73 million). Though the rumor mill has been quiet - the Miami Heat were said to be interested before LeBron James left and changed their offseason plans - Marion may command more than that amount elsewhere.

Last season, Marion's 15th in the league, he averaged 10.4 points and 6.5 rebounds while shooting 48.2 percent from the floor. More importantly, he remains a quality defender at either forward spot, and while the on-off splits don't do him justice this past season, he spent exactly 50 percent of his minutes with Dirk Nowitzki, Jose Calderon, and Monta Ellis all on the floor, putting quite a burden on him.

Power Forward

Michael Beasley. Super-Cool Beas. Okay, so maybe best power forward available isn't accurate, but Beasley's situation is intriguing.

The reclamation project with the Miami Heat, well, it didn't work. It looked like it may for a while, but Erik Spoelstra and company grew weary of his inconsistencies, his role shrunk, he hardly saw the floor in the playoffs, and the team renounced his Bird rights in the offseason. At 25 and having made four different stops in six NBA seasons, he's probably beyond saving.

But ... is he? He's definitely not going to be good, but for a team that needs scoring (he's averaged 13.2 points with a league-average player efficiency rating for his career), one that wants to get to the cap floor, or even one that just wants to watch their roster burn, Beasley could be a thing. (Okay, we just don't want him out of the league.)

Center

The most established name left on the market is Greg Monroe, who has missed only one game over the past three seasons while averaging 15.6 points, 9.5 rebounds, and 2.6 assists for the Detroit Pistons.

Why isn't he signed, then? Well, for one, he is said to want a maximum extension, something giving the Pistons and new president Stan Van Gundy pause. Five years and $60 million? Maybe. But the Pistons have been firm they won't go to the max, while Monroe's camp has kicked around the idea of signing his $5.48 million qualifying offer, which is risky and delays Monroe getting a significant raise but would also make him an unrestricted free agent next summer.

Given how thin this entire article has been on impact players, a team left in the lurch may decide that acquiring talent, regardless of whether it comes at the right price (looking at you, Gordon Hayward), is worth it.
