2015 projected lineups/rotation: NL Central

Charles LeClaire / USA TODAY Sports

There's already been an exceptional amount of activity so far this offseason - bad teams appear a lot better, and mediocre clubs are turning into contenders.

Although there promises to be much more turnover prior to spring training, the roster upheaval has us curious to see what lineups and pitching rotations could look like in 2015.

Here's a look at the projected lineups for the teams in the National League Central:

Chicago Cubs

Projected lineup:

The current Chicago Cubs hardly resemble the team that finished with 89 losses in 2014. Top prospects Javier Baez and Jorge Soler are preparing for the first full season in the majors. The team also upgraded behind the plate adding Miguel Montero. If Anthony Rizzo and Starlin Castro follow up their big seasons, the Cubs could finally climb out of the NL Central basement and into the postseason conversation.

# POS Player AVG/OBP/SLG
1 LF Chris Coghlan (L) .283/.352/.452
2 2B Javier Baez .169/.227/.324
3 1B Anthony Rizzo (L) .286/.386/.527
4 SS Starlin Castro .292/.339/.438
5 C Miguel Montero* (L) .243/.329/.370
6 RF Jorge Soler .292/.330/.573
7 3B Luis Valbuena (L) .249/.341/.435
8 CF Arismendy Alcantara (S) .205/.254/.367

Projected rotation:

Cubs president Theo Epstein and general manager Jed Hoyer landed prized free agent Jon Lester, while also bringing Jason Hammel back for some additional depth in the rotation. Jake Arrieta proved to be a valuable arm last season when healthy - but that's a big risk. The right-hander has thrown more than 120 innings in just one of his five seasons.

1 Jon Lester* (L) 219.2 2.46 220
2 Jake Arrieta 156.2 2.53 167

Pittsburgh Pirates

Projected lineup:

The Pirates were dealt a major blow to their roster when catcher Russell Martin chased the money north of the border. Now, the team will settle for the duo of Francisco Cervelli and Chris Stewart behind the plate. If Pedro Alvarez can rebound after a poor season, Pittsburgh's offense should be just fine.

# POS Player AVG/OBP/SLG
1 3B Josh Harrison .315/.347/.490
2 RF Gregory Polanco (L) .235/.307/.343
3 CF Andrew McCutchen .314/.410/.542
4 2B Neil Walker (S) .271/.342/.467
5 LF Starling Marte .291/.356/.453
6 1B Pedro Alvarez (L) .231/.312/.405
7 SS Jordy Mercer .255/.305/.387
8 C Francisco Cervelli* .301/.370/.432

Projected rotation:

General manager Neal Huntington grabbed a pair of familiar arms on affordable deals in Francisco Liriano and A.J. Burnett to complement young arms in Gerrit Cole and Jeff Locke. The Pirates are reportedly still interested in bringing back NL Wild Card starter Edinson Volquez, which would bounce Vance Worley out of the rotation.

2 Gerrit Cole 138 3.65 138

4 A.J. Burnett* 213.2 4.59 190
5 Vance Worley 110.2 2.85 79

St. Louis Cardinals

Projected lineup:

After the shocking death of Oscar Taveras, the Cardinals traded for Jason Heyward to play right field next season. The two-time Gold Glove winner should be a nice complement to a lineup that ranked in the top third in the majors in on-base percentage in 2014.

# POS Player AVG/OBP/SLG
1 3B Matt Carpenter (L) .272/.375/.375
2 2B Kolten Wong (L) .249/.292/.388
3 LF Matt Holliday .272/.370/.441
4 1B Matt Adams (L) .288/.321/.457
5 RF Jason Heyward* (L) .271/.351/.384
6 C Yadier Molina .282/.333/.386
7 SS Jhonny Peralta .262/.336/.443
8 CF Jon Jay (L) .303/.372/.378

Projected rotation:

With the Cardinals dealing Shelby Miller to the Atlanta Braves for Heyward, the door at the back of the rotation has opened for Carlos Martinez. General manager John Mozeliak said earlier this month that the fifth spot in the rotation is the 23-year-old's to lose.

Role Player IP ERA SO

2 Lance Lynn 203.2 2.74 181
3 John Lackey 198 3.82 164

5 Carlos Martinez 89.1 4.03 84

Milwaukee Brewers

Projected lineup:

After platooning veterans Mark Reynolds and Lyle Overbay at first base last season, the Brewers parted ways with both and traded them to the Toronto Blue Jays for Adam Lind. Other than Lind, the Brewers will deploy the same lineup that crumbled in the final month of last season. However, 2015 should also feature a healthy Ryan Braun, which could go a long way for the team's postseason chances.

# POS Player AVG/OBP/SLG
1 CF Carlos Gomez .284/.356/.477
2 C Jonathan Lucroy .301/.373/.465
3 RF Ryan Braun .266/.324/.453
4 3B Aramis Ramirez .285/.330/.427
5 1B Adam Lind* (L) .321/.381/.479
6 LF Khris Davis .244/.299/.457
7 2B Scooter Gennett (L) .289/.320/.434
8 SS Jean Segura .246/.289/.326

Projected rotation:

Jonathan Broxton will likely slide into the closer's role following the departure of Francisco Rodriguez, yet the rotation is left otherwise untouched. Mike Fiers stepped into the rotation in the final two months of the season and won six of his first seven starts - posting a 1.74 ERA.

Role Player IP ERA SO

2 Matt Garza 163.1 3.64 126
3 Wily Peralta 198.2 3.53 154
4 Kyle Lohse 198.1 3.54 141
5 Mike Fiers 71.2 2.13 76
CL Jonathan Broxton 58.2 2.30 49

Cincinnati Reds

The Reds finished 29th in the majors for average (.238) and on-base percentage (.296) last season, but a healthy Joey Votto should go a long way to improving that number in 2015. The four-time All-Star was limited to 62 games with a quad injury, but is expecting to play fully come spring training.

Projected lineup:

# POS PLAYER AVG/OBP/SLG
1 CF Billy Hamilton (S) .250/.292/.355
2 3B Todd Frazier .273/.336/.459
3 1B Joey Votto (L) .255/.390/.409
4 C Devin Mesoraco .273/.359/.534
5 LF Marlon Byrd* .264/.312/.445
6 RF Jay Bruce (L) .217/.281/.373
7 2B Brandon Phillips .266/.306/.372
8 SS Zack Cozart .221/.268/.300

Projected rotation:

While Johnny Cueto had his $10-million option picked up following a Cy Young caliber season, the Reds opted to trade away two of their starters from 2014. Mat Latos was packaged to the Miami Marlins, while Alfredo Simon was traded to the Detroit Tigers. This leaves the back end of the Reds rotation devoid of experience.

Role Player IP ERA SO
1 Johnny Cueto 243.2 2.25 242
2 Homer Bailey 145.2 3.71 124
3 Mike Leake 214.1 3.70 164
4 Tony Cingrani (L) 63.1 4.55 61
5 Anthony DeSclafani* (AAA) 59.1 3.49 59
