Aviles' cancer-free daughter throws out 1st pitch
Last year, then-Cleveland Indians infielder Mike Aviles watched proudly as his daughter Adriana - who was suffering from a form of childhood leukemia - threw out the ceremonial first pitch at Progressive Field alongside her twin sister, Maiya.
On Wednesday afternoon, Adriana did her dad one better.
The 5-year-old is now cancer-free thanks to a bone marrow transplant earlier this year. She celebrated at Comerica Park, where Mike now plays with the Detroit Tigers, by throwing another ceremonial first pitch to her dad, again with her sister, prior to Wednesday's game against the Phillies.
All of baseball rallied around the Aviles family last year. The Indians - including owner Paul Dolan - shaved their heads in support of Adriana, and they even refused to trade Mike to a contender at the trade deadline so he could remain with his daughter during her treatment.
