Euro 2016 Debrief, Day 13: Portugal limps into knockout rounds

Jason Cairnduff / Reuters

Each day throughout Euro 2016, we'll provide you with a briefing of everything you need to know from France after the day's matches have concluded; highlights of the action, the most pressing news from the tournament, and, of course, a look ahead to the following day.

From the pitch

Hungary 3, Portugal 3: Ronaldo saves homeland from elimination

Tantrums and tricks from Cristiano Ronaldo helped Portugal edge a draw against an increasingly dangerous Hungary at Lyon. It was a pulsating tie that pushes itself right into the reckoning of the best match that will be played out at Euro 2016, and saw Portugal reach the knockout stage as a best third-place finish.

A poor return for the Seleccao after being paired with Austria, Hungary, and Iceland in Group F.

Iceland 2, Austria 1: Last-ditch Traustason winner confirms historic leap into last 16

Iceland players soaked up so much Austrian pressure that they were saturated by the time Elmar Bjarnason flip-flopped his way down the pitch on 94 minutes, but Arnor Ingvi Traustason poked home to spark eruptions volatile enough to rival those of Eyjafjallajokull in 2010.

One win and two draws saw Iceland secure a second-placed Group F finish and a Round of 16 meeting with England. Roy Hodgson must be quaking.

Italy 0, Ireland 1: Brady snatches knockout-round berth

Robbie Brady's late winner against Italy must go down as one of the greatest moments of Martin O'Neill's 29-year managerial career.

Under the closed roof of the Stade Pierre-Mauroy, the Norwich City man - renowned for a left foot that could open a tin of baked beans rather than his aerial prowess - latched onto a Wes Hoolahan cross to head Ireland into the Round of 16. Let the celebrations begin.

Sweden 0, Belgium 1: Red Devils secure Round of 16 matchup with Hungary

Radja Nainggolan isn't shy when it comes to cracking one from distance, and his 84th-minute deflected strike helped ensure Zlatan Ibrahimovic's Sweden farewell was an unhappy one. Belgium progresses to take on Group F topper Hungary.

In the news

Ronaldo surpasses Shearer for 2nd on all-time scoring list at Euros

On the same day that Ronaldo set a new record for appearances in European Championships with 17, he also neared a goal tally that has gone untouched for 32 years.

He opened his tournament account with a deft back-heel flick to become the first-ever player to score in four separate Euros, and then followed it up with a header that puts him within a goal of the all-time high in the continent's international showpiece. Sitting rather uncomfortably on his nine tallies is disgraced former UEFA president Michel Platini.

Report: FA agitated by Hodgson's team selection vs. Slovakia

Can you blame the Football Association?

Roy Hodgson may have to answer the questions of his employers after Monday's 0-0 draw against Slovakia. It meant England finished below Wales in Group B and therefore progressed into the tougher half of the knockout bracket.

A blunder by the veteran manager to make wholesale changes to his lineup, including giving Liverpool's worst captain in living memory, Jordan Henderson, a full 90 minutes and continuing to leave Ross Barkley unused.

Goal of the day

He made us wait, but what a delicate and beautiful finish from Ronaldo:

Best moment

Nothing tops this. The shrill reaction of an Icelandic commentator following Traustason's late winner was as heartwarming as it was frightening:
