Victor Martinez was on fire Thursday against the Kansas City Royals and he was doing his damage from both sides of the plate.

The Detroit Tigers designated hitter hit three home runs against the Kansas City Royals in a 10-4 shellacking of the reigning World Series champions.

Martinez, hitting from the right side, took Royals starter Danny Duffy deep on two occasions before adding a left-handed dinger against Chien-Ming Wang late in the game.

It was the second time he's recorded three homers in a game during his career, first accomplishing the feat on July 16, 2004 as a member of the Cleveland Indians.

The switch-hitting Martinez became the first Tiger to homer from both sides of the plate in a game since Carlos Guillen on Sept. 23, 2009.

The 37-year-old is hitting .338 with an OPS of .946 with 12 home runs and 38 RBIs for the Tigers, who sit 1 1/2 games out of first in the American League Central.
