Here are theScore's catcher value rankings for Monday, May 30 (all stats exclude Sunday's games):
Value Rankings

Top Options
Name | Opponent | Value |
---|---|---|
Josh Phegley (OAK) | vs. MIN | 9 |
Wilson Ramos (WAS) | at PHI | 8 |
Brian McCann (NYY) | at TOR | 8 |
Yan Gomes (CLE) | vs. TEX | 8 |
Stephen Vogt (OAK) | vs. MIN | 8 |
Phegley is hitting a sparkling .317 on the season, with his average rising to .320 against right-handed pitching. He doesn't have much power and hasn't hit a home run yet this season, but he has a nice matchup against Twins RHP Ervin Santana. Ramos picked up three more hits and his sixth home run of the season Sunday. He's oddly favored right-handed pitching.
McCann looks to bust out of his mini-slump with a move to the hitter-friendly Rogers Centre in Toronto. He'll face Blue Jays RHP Marco Estrada, an imposing matchup but one which favors his left-handed hitting. Gomes and Vogt have been wildly inconsistent, but they each face the best side of their respective splits.
Mid-Tier Targets
Name | Opponent | Value |
---|---|---|
Matt Wieters (BAL) | vs. BOS | 7 |
Jonathan Lucroy (MIL) | vs. STL | 7 |
Tyler Flowers (ATL) | vs. SF | 7 |
Yadier Molina (STL) | at MIL | 7 |
Welington Castillo (ARI) | vs. HOU | 6 |
Francisco Cervelli (PIT) | at MIA | 6 |
Buster Posey (SF) | at ATL | 6 |
The switch-hitting Wieters has strongly favored right-handed pitching this season, but he can't quite make the top tier against unpredictable Red Sox knuckleballer Steven Wright. Lucroy and Posey each get slight drops due to their lofty price tags, but they're safe choices for at least some production.
Molina and Cervelli lack tournament upside without much to offer by means of power. Castillo should start Monday after receiving the day off Sunday, but he's struggled against right-handed pitching.
Name | Opponent | Value |
---|---|---|
Russell Martin (TOR) | vs. NYY | 5 |
Yasmani Grandal (LAD) | at CHC | 5 |
Tucker Barnhart (CIN) | at COL | 5 |
J.T. Realmuto (MIA) | vs. PIT | 4 |
Christian Vazquez (BOS) | at BAL | 4 |
Alex Avila (CWS) | at NYM | 4 |
Hank Conger (TB) | at KC | 4 |
James McCann (DET) | at LAA | 4 |
Martin is in his best stretch of the season, slashing .278/.333/.556 over his past 10 games. He isn't a safe selection against Yankees RHP Ivan Nova, but he's been flashing his potential with more regularity.
The right-handed hitting Realmuto has struggled to a .182 average against left-handed pitching this season, but he has one of his better matchups on Monday against Pirates LHP Jeff Locke.
Nothing to See Here
Name | Opponent | Value |
---|---|---|
Derek Norris (SD) | at SEA | 3 |
Bobby Wilson (TEX) | at CLE | 3 |
Tony Wolters (COL) | vs. CIN | 3 |
Blake Swihart (BOS) | at BAL | 2 |
Miguel Montero (CHC) | vs. LAD | 2 |
Norris has the most potential of the group, but he hasn't shown anything trustworthy in 2016. Wilson has been hot, but his price has risen rapidly, and he's struggled against righties for the most part. Wolters' salary remains inflated from his impressive previous stint in the majors. The results haven't been the same during his current tenure.
