Giants, A's would sign Steph Curry

Steph Curry, the NBA's unanimous MVP, was once a ballplayer to dream on.

He was nothing like his father, Dell Curry, who pitched in the Texas Rangers system for one season in 1991. Dell was a 6-foot-5 right-hander, while Steph was a fast, splashy type hitter that some clubs would take a chance on, even today.

San Francisco Giants general manager Bobby Evans was short and sweet when asked by the San Francisco Chronicle's John Shea if he would take a chance on Curry.

"I will take him," Evans said bluntly.

Oakland Athletics GM David Frost had more of an in-depth reason why the Golden State Warriors' point guard would fair well in pro baseball, stating his pure athleticism and sharp instincts.

"I'm sure it's not surprising to you, but I think Steph would excel at anything he does, including baseball," he said. "I could imagine him covering a ton of ground in center field, with his instincts for the ball helping him get great jumps off the bat.

"There are a lot of similarities in the way a point guard anticipates where his guys and the defenders are going to be and how a defensive player in baseball anticipates where the ball is going to be off the bat. I see him being a high-contact, leadoff-type hitter with his incredible hand-eye coordination, and he's a lot stronger than I think most people give him credit for. He'd have a chance to surprise with a few home runs out of the leadoff spot."

Of course, nobody is encouraging Curry to take the Michael Jordan route. The basketball legend tried his hand at baseball, batting .202/.289/.266 with three homers in 127 games at Double-A Birmingham in the Chicago White Sox system.

That's not to say Curry would be bad, but no one's saying he'd be great, either. Just that, given what they see from him now, he's worth a shot.

"Off the record," Boston scout Gary Hughes said, "the Red Sox would love to have him. ... Ah, go with it."
