Report: Ryan Doumit considers playing career over

Jesse Johnson-USA TODAY Sports

Ryan Doumit patrolled the outfield for the Atlanta Braves as recently as September and is still about 11 months away from celebrating his 35th birthday.

Unable to secure a job with an MLB team this offseason, though, the 10-year veteran now considers his playing career over, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.

Doumit, a second-round pick in the 1999 draft, appeared in 100 games for the Braves last season, but managed a paltry .553 OPS (54 OPS+) with 49 strikeouts in 166 plate appearances. A catcher for most of his career, Doumit logged most of his playing time in the outfield in 2014, struggling to provide value with his glove while enduring the worst offensive season of his career.

Over parts of 10 seasons in the majors, Doumit hit .264/.324/.432 (103 OPS+) with 104 home runs in 980 games between the Braves, Minnesota Twins, and Pittsburgh Pirates. Though his career ended rather abruptly, Doumit once ranked among the better offensive catchers in baseball, compiling a 112 OPS+ while averaging 13 homers and 24 doubles per season from 2008-12.
