Reds trade Alfredo Simon to Tigers in 3-player deal

The Detroit Tigers acquired pitcher Alfredo Simon from the Cincinnati Reds for shortstop Eugenio Suarez and minor-leaguer Jonathon Crawford, the clubs announced Thursday at the winter meetings.
Simon, 33, was an All-Star last year in his first full season as a starter. The hard-throwing right-hander threw a career-high 196 1/3 innings last season with a personal-best 127 strikeouts and 15 wins in 32 starts.

The Tigers' acquisition of Simon broke shortly after news of a reported swap between Detroit and the Boston Red Sox involving Yoenis Cespedes and Rick Porcello. Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski hinted an announcement of that trade was imminent.
"We'll have something else to discuss after," he told reporters at the press conference.
Simon, who is entering the final year of arbitration next season, has spent the majority of his career as a reliever with the Reds and Baltimore Orioles. The 6-foot-6 right-hander has a 3.86 ERA and 1.30 WHIP over seven big-league seasons. He's projected to earn $5.1 million this winter, according to MLB Trade Rumors.
Suaruez, 23, hit .242 with four homers and nine doubles over 85 games as a rookie last year for the Tigers. The Venezuelan native figures to compete for reps at shortstop with the weak-hitting Zack Cozart.
Crawford, 23, spent last season in Single-A, posting an 8-3 record and 2.85 ERA over 23 starts. The 2013 first-round pick recorded 85 strikeouts and 50 walks in 123 innings.
