Combine Results

Strengths

• A foundation running back who possesses an ideal combination of short-area quickness, high-end speed and pile-pushing power. 
• Cuts sharply and accelerates to top speed quickly. Little wasted movement. 
• Good vision and decision-making. Sees the hole and hits it. 
• Comfortable as a receiver.
• Willing blocker with potential to become an excellent pass protector. 
• Rarely fumbles. 

Weaknesses

• Medical red flag. Coming off a torn ACL. Wasn't able to work out at the scouting combine or his pro day. 
• Did not allow NFL doctors to thoroughly examine his surgically repaired knee at the combine, though will reportedly submit to supplemental medical testing before the draft. 
• Upright running style exposes him to big hits. 
• Needs improvement as a pass blocker. 

NFL player comparison: Steven Jackson

Gurley's running style is reminiscent of a young Steven Jackson but with significantly better top-end speed. Gurley is a fearless runner who hits the hole with abandon, cuts sharply between defenders without losing balance and is willing and capable of hurdling opponents when necessary.

Ideal fit: New England Patriots

Gurley has the best chance of any running back since 2012 to be selected in the first round, but injury concerns should push him down the board a bit. The Patriots at 32 could be the sweet spot. The Patriots have never been shy about adding players coming off major injuries (the team spent its 2014 first-round pick on Dominique Easley, who tore both his ACLs in college) and they have a major need at running back after allowing both Shane Vereen and Stevan Ridley (who is still unsigned) to depart in free agency.
