Strengths

  • Plays with speed and physicality, not shying away from contact and proving difficult for defenders to bring down.
  • Falls forward when tackled, often still picking up yards where there isn't much of a gain to be made.
  • Demonstrates quick feet and elusiveness to make defenders miss both at the line of scrimmage and downfield, maintaining an impressive level of balance throughout his runs.
  • Plays with good vision, making quick decisions at the line and setting up his blocks effectively.
  • Smooth and effective receiver out of the backfield, giving him true three-down value in the NFL.

Weaknesses

  • Is a willing pass blocker, but could stand to improve technique for better overall results.
  • Running style exposed him to some big hits in college and he'll have to do better to avoid such punishment in the NFL.
  • Had some issues with ball security throughout collegiate career.

NFL player comparison: Joique Bell

A physical runner with impressive quickness and balance, as well as an ability to contribute as a receiver out of the backfield, Ajayi best compares to current Detroit Lions running back Bell.

Though Bell has yet to become a true feature back, like Ajayi should do early in his pro career, his complete skill set allows him to have an impact in all areas of the offensive game. Like Bell, Ajayi will also need to work on improving his ball security.

Ideal fit: Dallas Cowboys

After losing DeMarco Murray in free agency, the Cowboys will be in search of another running back in the draft. Pressing needs on the defensive side should see them look elsewhere with their first-round pick, making Ajayi a suitable target in the second round.

With the ability to contribute as a three-down player, Ajayi would step into the starting backfield role from day one. While there will be several running backs selected before him, the opportunity to run behind a dominant Cowboys offensive line would set Ajayi up to be one of the most productive rookies in this class.

Draft projection: 2nd Round
