Why was Chad Kelly invited, then uninvited to the NFL combine?

Former Ole Miss quarterback Chad Kelly is considered a late-round pick for this year's draft, at best, and might now struggle to even get selected after he wasn't invited to the NFL Scouting Combine.

Or was he?

Kelly has significant off-field concerns, which is the reason he wasn't one of the 330 players asked to come to Indianapolis in March, team sources told Bleacher Report's Matt Miller.

The 22-year-old was kicked off the Clemson football team due to his behavior, took part in a brawl at his young brother's high school football game, and pleaded guilty to misdemeanor disorderly conduct charge for a nightclub incident two years ago.

So with the NFL implementing a new rule this year that prohibits players who've been convicted of a violent crime from attending the combine, it was no surprise to see Kelly on the outside looking in.

However, ESPN's Bill Polian - a close friend of the Kelly family - said Wednesday the young pivot was originally invited to the event, but he had it rescinded, according to ESPN's Adam Caplan.

The story then took another confusing turn, as Kelly's agent Vance McAllister confirmed Polian's comments, telling 1270 The Fan that the NFL had invited his client on Jan. 6, told him to book a flight to Indianapolis, and that the league themselves haven't rescinded his invitation, according to ESPN's Mike Rodak.

"We have an official invite to come to the combine; we got a flight booked," McAllister told "The Tim Graham Show" Wednesday. "He has a jersey number there waiting on him, and until we get a written disinvite - or whatever you want to call it - from the league, we'll be in Indy.

"We'll show up, and they'll have to tell Chad 'no' then, because they're obviously not willing to put it in writing to tell Chad 'no' now."

McAllister said it was the combine who called him to inform them that Kelly's invite would be rescinded, but added the only word received from the NFL has been voicemails from VP of football operations Troy Vincent saying "he will not discuss the details".

Kelly was on the official NFL Scouting Combine invitation list on Feb. 1, a source told Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio, which begs the question: Why was he invited to the combine under the league's new rules?

Florio adds that members of several teams are concerned with the new rules regarding keeping away certain prospects, with one source saying, "Any of these guys with question marks need to be vetted."

Kelly tore his ACL and meniscus last November, so he likely wouldn't have been able to participate in any drills. But his rescinded invite means he'll miss crucial team interviews and won't be able to be medically evaluated until a later date.

While how this affects Kelly moving forward remains to be seen, it isn't a good look for the NFL, whose apparently muddled handling of his case could undermine the policy.
