Crazy Saturday in MLB sees 6 teams score 10-plus runs

Saturday was not a great day to be a pitcher.

It was, however, one of the wildest days of baseball in recent memory. Six of Major League Baseball's 17 games played Saturday featured teams scoring double-digit runs, and all of those scores came in ballgames that weren't close.

Strangely, many of the blowouts were in parks not known for being friendly to hitters - and no team was aided by the thin air at Coors Field, as the Rockies were on the road in Miami.

Here's a brief rundown of the carnage:

In Cleveland, the Seattle Mariners' bats woke up in a big way during a 12-4 romp of the Indians. Seattle slugged three homers, chased Indians starter Carlos Carrasco after three innings, and put up a five-spot in the fifth inning en route to the easy win.

Seattle wasn't the only team to score exactly 12 times on Saturday. The Tampa Bay Rays did it too, with a 12-6 win over Boston at Fenway Park highlighted by three homers and a four-run ninth. The Rays scored at least once in each of the last five innings to grab their eighth consecutive victory in dominating fashion.

The defending champion Houston Astros also got in on the act with an 11-0 thrashing of Oakland. Lance McCullers Jr. kept the Athletics at bay all night, flirting with perfection over seven scoreless frames. But, the story was Houston's offense exploding for 13 hits.

Both Bay Area teams got shelled on Saturday, as the San Francisco Giants were walloped 15-6 by the Dodgers in the first game of a doubleheader. Los Angeles scored six runs off starter Chris Stratton and added 20 hits - the Dodgers had so many hits they somehow left 28 runners on base despite scoring 15 times. How badly did things go for the Giants? The only pitcher to set the Dodgers down in order was third baseman Pablo Sandoval, who stole the show with his ninth-inning cameo.

The most surprising blowout of the day came in San Diego, where the Padres destroyed the visiting Mets 12-2. The Padres only hit two home runs, but one of them was a 459-foot shot by left fielder Franchy Cordero, his third 450-plus foot homer of the month. This kind of win is becoming a rather surprising trend for San Diego early in the season, reversing its luck from one year ago.

Finally, the New York Yankees stomped the Angels 11-1 to earn their eighth straight win. The Bronx Bombers put this one to bed early, scoring the first 10 runs while batting around in each of the first two innings, accomplishing the feat without hitting any homers.
