Yankees bring out hit brigade in opening 2 innings vs. Angels

Richard Mackson / USA TODAY Sports

The New York Yankees brought their thunder and lumber to California.

The Yankees sent a total of 19 batters to the plate over the first two innings of Saturday night's game against the Los Angeles Angels, giving righty starter Masahiro Tanaka a lofty 10-0 lead to work with.

Here is how it went down:

  • Brett Gardner: strikeout
  • Aaron Judge: single
  • Didi Gregorius: walk
  • Giancarlo Stanton: reached on error
  • Gary Sanchez: double
  • Aaron Hicks: ground out
  • Neil Walker: reached after dropped third strike
  • Miguel Andujar: double
  • Gleyber Torres: ground out
  • Gardner: walk
  • Judge: double
  • Gegorius: ground out
  • Stanton: ground out
  • Sanchez: walk
  • Hicks: triple
  • Walker: single
  • Andujar: single
  • Torres: single
  • Gardner: ground out

After the messy onslaught, the Yankees had chased Angels starter Garrett Richards from the game, who recorded only five outs on 55 pitches.

And they weren't getting bloopers for hits, either. The Bronx Bombers were making consistent, solid contact.

Surprisingly, it hasn't been all that long since the last time the Yankees batted around in each of the first two innings. They last accomplished the feat on July 24, 2007 against the Kansas City Royals. (h/t to StatsBySTATS)

Turn away Angels fans, there's always tomorrow.
