Report: Rays made 'initial' offer to Castro
With the market for catching being a thin one, free agent Jason Castro is drawing interest, and he looks to already have an offer on the table.
The 29-year-old has received an "initial" offer from the Tampa Bay Rays, reports Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.
Castro's agent, Fred Wray, said the Rays "are right in the thick of things," and that his client is weighing multiple options.
The backstop has also received reported interest from the Atlanta Braves, who look to be a serious bidder for his services.
If the season were to start today, Curt Casali and Luke Maile would share catching duties in Tampa.
Castro is one of the top catchers available on the open market, along with Wilson Ramos and Matt Wieters, after hitting .210/.307/.377 with 11 home runs and 32 RBIs, while earning notoriety as one of the best pitch framers in the majors.
The former first-round pick made $5 million last season and is a free agent for the first time.
