Watch: Tigers hit into bizarre interference double play
Joe West gets a lot of deserved grief for his umpiring skills, but he deserves credit for getting this bizarre double-play call right on Friday night.
With one out and Ian Kinsler on third base, Detroit Tigers designated hitter Victor Martinez lofted a foul pop to first base, an easy out for Oakland Athletics first baseman Yonder Alonso in the vast Coliseum foul ground. Kinsler bluffed a move towards home, which prompted a wild throw from Alonso that allowed the second baseman to trot in with the Tigers' third run of the game.
Or so he, and pretty much everyone except West, thought. The veteran umpire immediately called Kinsler out because Alonso's throw glanced off the calf of Martinez, who was walking back to his dugout and got in the way.
For those of you scoring at home, that's a 3-2 batter's interference double play that couldn't be repeated again if everybody tried.
