Liverpool progresses with result against Manchester United

Liverpool did enough Thursday at Old Trafford to advance to the Europa League quarter-finals courtesy of a 1-1 draw with fellow English giants Manchester United.

The Reds took the tie 3-1 on aggregate to become the Premier League's sole representative left in Europe's second tier tournament. It is their first quarter-final appearance in either European competition since the 2009-10 season.

United defender Guillermo Varela may want to print up a few resumes after Philippe Coutinho's goal moments before the interval had the Uruguayan full-back looking more like a pylon than a footballer.

The round of 16 clash marked the first time the two sides have met in continental competition, and a 2-0 deficit from the first leg proved to be too much for Louis van Gaal's injury-riddled side.

Blockbuster summer signing Anthony Martial opened the scoring in the 32nd minute with a limp penalty effort to give the visitors hope before the Brazilian international turned the corner on Varela to all but guarantee Liverpool's progression.

Liverpool will now await Friday's draw to determine who it will face with a semi-finals berth on the line, with Borussia Dortmund, Shakhtar Donetsk, Braga, Villarreal, Sparta Prague, Athletic Bilbao and defending champs Sevilla left in the competition.
