Report: Red Sox unlikely to target pitchers with large contracts before deadline

A disappointing start to the season is likely to prevent the Boston Red Sox from making a major financial splash prior to the non-waiver trade deadline at the end of the month.

While the Red Sox have been linked to Philadelphia Phillies ace Cole Hamels for the better part of the season, the Red Sox will make it a priority to try to acquire young pitchers who are under team control beyond this season, rather than chase pitchers already owed a substantial amount of money, a source tells Rob Bradford of WEEI.

Though the Phillies have reportedly stated they'd be willing to eat some of the more than $70 million owed to Hamels, Bradford's source suggests the Red Sox are eyeing other alternatives.

The Red Sox currently sit in the American League East basement and their starters' 4.78 ERA is the fourth-worst mark in the majors.

Boston's front office has shown a reluctance to commit big dollars for pitchers over the age of 30 before, as illustrated by their lackluster offseason pursuit of left-hander Jon Lester.

Rick Porcello and Wade Miley are under contract next season, while Clay Buchholz has a $13-million team option and Joe Kelly is eligible for arbitration for the first time.

The Red Sox were in the same unenviable position last season. Sitting in last place, the front office unloaded a slew of veterans for younger players under team control. Kelly was one of those arms, as well as Eduardo Rodriguez.
