Report: Angels' Dipoto 'definitely out' as GM amid rift with Scioscia

Los Angeles may only be big enough for one of Jerry Dipoto and Mike Scioscia.

After reports of a resurfaced rift between Dipoto, the Angels' general manager, and Scioscia, the club's manager, it appears the situation may be nearing a conclusion: Dipoto's considering stepping down from his post, reports MLB.com's Alden Gonzalez.

"It's possible," said Gonzalez's source.

Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal weighed in as well, saying Dipoto packed up his office and left the stadium Tuesday. "Status quo here as of now," a club official said.

ESPN's Jerry Crasnick's source was more forthcoming on Dipoto's future, saying: "He's definitely out."

Here's more from Crasnick:

An MLB source told ESPN.com that Dipoto approached owner Arte Moreno with an ultimatum that "backfired."

The rumors come amid increasing tension building between the clubhouse and front office. Prior to Tuesday's game against the New York Yankees, several players chimed in on their distaste for whoever allowed the news to leave the organization.

"Whoever leaked that story, it's really embarrassing," Angels first baseman Albert Pujols told Gonzalez. "We're supposed to be family in here."

Gonzalez writes succinctly about the recent reported tension between Dipoto and Scioscia:

On Monday, a FoxSports.com report stated that "emotions simmered" amid a series of meetings revolving around the front office’s belief that the coaching staff was doing an inadequate job of relaying scouting information to players. In those meetings, occurring this past weekend, at least one coach "responded heatedly" to Dipoto and Pujols issued "a pointed rebuttal" to the fourth-year GM.

Scioscia had the following to say after the story about what allegedly happened in the Angels' clubhouse leaked to the media:

There's really nothing to say about anything that might or might not have happened. Jerry and I work together the same way we've worked the last couple of years, and that's where we are.

Hardly a ringing endorsement for a relationship thought to be on far from solid footing.

Meanwhile, a Yahoo Sports report Tuesday quoted an Angels official as saying the relationship between the two men "looks irreparable."

"Something's got to give," the official said. It appears something may have.

The Angels beat the Yankees 2-1 on Tuesday night, improving to 41-37 with the win, their fourth straight. The club's four games back of the Houston Astros in the American League West heading into action Wednesday.

We're thinking July 1 won't simply be another night at the ballpark in Anaheim.
