Connor McDavid had high praise for the NHL club likely to select him first overall in June's NHL Entry Draft.

The top prospect said he's looking forward to joining the Edmonton Oilers if and when they draft him on June 26 in Sunrise, Fla.

"Whether or not it's the Oilers that are selecting me, anything can happen on draft day, you never know, (but) that's an unbelievable organization and it will be a true honor to be able to go there," McDavid told Sportsnet's George Stroumboulopoulos after the lottery results were revealed.

The Oilers won the NHL Draft Lottery on Saturday night with the third-highest odds of securing the top pick at 11.5 percent. The Buffalo Sabres (20 percent) and Arizona Coyotes (13.5 percent) each moved down one slot, drafting second and third overall respectively.

"That was about as an intense and exciting couple of minutes as I've ever had, but it was fun," McDavid said. "I'm still trying to gather my thoughts, but it's been exciting for sure."

McDavid is considered a generational talent and the best prospect since reigning Hart Trophy winner Sidney Crosby.

If he's drafted by the Oilers, he'll join a young core that already features previous first-overall picks Taylor Hall, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Nail Yakupov, along with the club's leading point-scorer, Jordan Eberle, and last year's third-overall selection, Leon Draisaitl.
