Report: Baron Davis planning comeback, has spoken with teams

Steve Mitchell-US PRESSWIRE

And here you thought Michael Beasley would be the weirdest addition to a potential playoff team after the trade deadline.

Baron Davis could be on his way back to the NBA.

It's worth taking with an enormous grain of salt given how big a stretch it is, but TMZ reported Friday that Davis is planning a comeback and has been in talks with multiple contenders.

The Los Angeles Clippers and Cleveland Cavaliers were mentioned as potential destinations, though the latter doesn't have a roster spot available, and the decidedly not-contending Los Angeles Lakers were also mentioned.

Davis hasn't played in the NBA since the 2011-12 playoffs, when he was a member of the New York Knicks. Now 35 years old, it's tough to envision Davis coming back after nearly three calendar years away, especially since he hasn't been playing professionally anywhere in the time since.

Still, this isn't exactly out of nowhere. Davis was said to be attempting a comeback this summer, and prior to that, he had been releasing comedic videos as he got back in shape for what appeared to be a fake comeback.

While it's impossible to know what to expect from Davis, he was once a very productive player. In 825 games over 13 seasons with six different teams, the two-time All-Star averaged 16.1 points, 3.8 rebounds, 7.2 assists and 1.8 steals.

While March 1 is sometimes thrown out as the date a player must be signed by to be eligible for a playoff roster, that's actually incorrect - as long as Davis isn't on another NBA roster as of March 1, he'd be eligible when he signs somewhere.
