DAY 2

Winston weighs in

Forget those rumors about Jameis Winston showing up to the combine out of shape. Though a photo that emerged recently appeared to show the Florida State passer with a bit of a gut, Winston measured in at 6-foot-3 and 231 pounds on Thursday. That's right in line with his expected playing weight as a pro.

Marcus Mariota's measurements are a similar 6-foot-3, 222 pounds. Unlike recent years, there will be no talk of whether the quarterbacks at the top of this draft class have the size necessary to succeed in the pros.

Offensive linemen and tight ends hit the bench press

Players finally got to work at the NFL Combine on Thursday, with offensive linemen and tight ends going through the bench press.

Miami offensive tackle Ereck Flowers was the best of the linemen, putting up 37 reps. As far as the tight ends were concerned, Gerald Christian and his 28 reps topped the group.

Todd Gurley wants to go first overall

You can never accuse running back Todd Gurley of having a lack of confidence.

The Georgia product proclaimed Thursday that he is worthy of being selected first-overall at the draft.

Gurley ran for more than 900 yards in only six games before a torn ACL ended his season.

While it's highly unlikely Gurley will go No. 1, he should end the two-year drought of not seeing a running back taken in the opening round.

Green-Beckham equals Megatron

Wide receiver Dorial Green-Beckham measured in at 6-foot-5 and 237 pounds on Thursday.

Moments after the numbers came in, the comparisons to Detroit Lions star Calvin Johnson began. Johnson measures in at 6-foot-5 and 236 pounds.

Green-Beckham is considered by many to have skills similar to Johnson. Significant character concerns will likely prevent Green-Beckham from being drafted near where Johnson was (No. 2 overall in 2007), providing a team with the opportunity to get a real bargain.

Petty to participate in throwing drills

Joining some of the other top quarterbacks in this class, Baylor's Bryce Petty will participate in on-field throwing drills this week.

While NFL teams won't be breaking down every throw he makes, it's a positive sign that Petty is among this year's crop of signal callers willing to compete instead of opting to sit out and wait for the comfortable environment of a pro day.

Petty likely won't challenge Winston and Mariota atop the quarterback group, but his workouts will give him the opportunity to solidify his spot among the second tier of signal callers on draft boards around the league.

Hundley wants to go first

UCLA's Brett Hundley didn't lack confidence when he spoke to the media Thursday, telling reporters he wants to be the first overall pick in the draft and promising to prove his doubters wrong.

Hundley said several quarterback-needy teams have expressed interest in him and said he believes he would be a great fit in Chip Kelly's offense.

Perriman withdraws from workouts

Wide receiver Breshad Perriman will not work out at the combine after suffering an injury. Perriman will instead work out for scouts at UCF's pro day in late March.
