Ross breaks NFL combine record with official 40 time of 4.22 seconds

Brian Spurlock / USA TODAY Sports

As if there was ever any doubt, John Ross has wheels.

The Washington wide receiver posted an official 40 time of 4.22 seconds at Saturday's NFL Scouting Combine workouts, breaking Chris Johnson's long-standing event record of 4.24.

Ross has long been considered a likely first-round pick, and confirmation of the elite speed he showed on tape will presumably make him a lock for that range.

Unfortunately, Ross wasn't among the combine athletes wearing Adidas shoes for his 40 run, making him ineligible for the company's offer of an Island for anyone who breaks Johnson's record.

NFL Network reported shortly after his run that he was dealing with calf cramps and would not take part in a second attempt. The injury will also keep him out of position drills, but it's safe to say scouts in attendance have already seen more than enough to be impressed.

Here are some other notable 40 times from Saturday's group of wide receivers:

Player College Time
Curtis Samuel Ohio State 4.31
Josh Malone Tennessee 4.40
KD Cannon Baylor 4.41
Quincy Adeboyejo Mississippi 4.42
Chris Godwin Penn State 4.42
Isaiah McKenzie Georgia 4.42
Michael Rector Stanford 4.42
