Selected 54th overall by the Nashville Predators in 2007, Smith tried on a sixth different minor-league sweater when he joined the Avalanche organization this summer.
Smith has primarily served as a backup to Spencer Martin with Colorado's American Hockey League affiliate in San Antonio, appearing in 17 games and carving out a .911 save percentage.
The 27-year-old's been up with the club on multiple occasions this season to back up Calvin Pickard, but has not appeared in any games.
