Red Sox president wants to stay internal to replace GM Hazen

With Mike Hazen on his way to Arizona, the Boston Red Sox are now on the hunt for a new general manager, and president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski would prefer to promote from within rather than hire somebody from outside the organization.

"Ideally you'd like to stay internal," Dombrowski told reporters.

There's no firm timetable to replace Hazen, who was introduced as the Diamondbacks' general manager Monday morning, but Dombrowski will begin interviewing internal candidates this week, according to Jen McCaffrey of MassLive.com.

Dombrowski, who took over Boston's baseball operations department last August, also noted that the responsibilities of the new GM may differ from what Hazen did in his 13 months as general manager of the Red Sox.

"Dependent on the person you hire, you can configure the responsibilities differently," Dombrowski said.

On Sunday, Bob Nightengale of USA Today speculated that Frank Wren, the club's vice president of baseball operations (and Dombrowski's front-office colleague in both Montreal and Florida, previously), was the leading candidate for the GM job. Gus Quattleman, the Red Sox scouting director since last September, is also a name to keep in mind, according to WEEI's Rob Bradford.

Last year, when Wren was promoted to his current position, Dombrowski praised the former GM's talent evaluation skills.

"His background and what he brings to the organization is great, we're very fortunate to have him," Dombrowski said. "I've talked with Frank, his main responsibility is talent evaluation. That's why he came on board. At the major-league level, when we talk about making trades or talk about signing free-agent players, we really want him actively involved in that."
