Watch: Ortiz turns on jets for key 8th-inning double
David Ortiz is putting everything on the line in his final taste of October baseball.
The Boston Red Sox slugger laced a double to right-center field off Cleveland Indians reliever Cody Allen in the eighth inning of Game 1 in the ALDS, but he had to push hard to get there. Big Papi turned on all the afterburners in his 40-year-old body as he rounded first base and just barely slid into second safely ahead of Francisco Lindor's tag.
Ortiz reached a top speed of 17.2 mph, according to Daren Willman of MLB.com, while StatCast measured his run from home to first at 8.91 seconds, - his second-fastest such run of the season.
The double was also the 41st extra-base hit of Ortiz's postseason career - the fourth-most in playoff history.
Marco Hernandez pinch-ran for Ortiz and represented the tying run, but was stranded at third base when Xander Bogaerts struck out to end the eighth inning.
