Report: McGregor 'fine' despite injury rumor, wants to fight at MSG

With UFC 205 just over eight weeks away, another domino may have fallen into place.

Wednesday's broadcast of "UFC Tonight" partially dented the quandary surrounding the upcoming landmark event, the promotion's first in New York City. Contrary to weeks of chatter, ESPN's Brett Okamoto reported it's "unlikely" Conor McGregor will challenge Eddie Alvarez for the lightweight title in November. The Irishman was said to be rehabbing a leg injury presumably sustained in his victorious rematch with Nate Diaz at UFC 202.

Okamoto's ensuing investigation refuted the report, claiming the featherweight champ is "fine" and that the injury would not prevent him from making UFC 205, which is still without a headlining bout. MMAFighting's Ariel Helwani, who did some digging of his own, revealed McGregor is healthy, training, and still dead set on challenging Alvarez at Madison Square Garden.

Even if the alleged injury's severity is indeed being trumped up, it's uncertain Alvarez will get booked as McGregor's next dance partner, as the reigning lightweight champ has just been offered a title defense against Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 206 in Toronto.

If "The Underground King" signs on the dotted line, McGregor can return to featherweight, where he'll likely grant interim champion Jose Aldo a rematch that would unify their respective belts.
