Alvarez receives offer to fight Nurmagomedov at UFC 206 in Toronto
The curious case of Eddie Alvarez's first lightweight title defense could soon be resolved.
Alvarez has been sent a bout agreement to meet No. 1 contender Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 206 in Toronto. Megan Olivi announced the proposal on Wednesday's edition of UFC Tonight.
While far from definitive, the news brings some much-needed clarity to a surreal Twitter sequence involving Alvarez, Nurmagomedov, Conor McGregor, and UFC president Dana White, who'd claimed Alvarez would indeed meet Nurmagomedov instead of the Irishman.
The 32-year-old had reportedly fielded an offer to fight "The Eagle" – not McGregor, as had long been rumored – at Madison Square Garden, but failed to agree to the terms in time.
The champion, who claimed the title with a first-round knockout of Rafael dos Anjos in July, has repeatedly voiced his desire to welcome McGregor to the lightweight division, but it appears the promotion will respect its rankings and give Nurmagomedov his due instead.
The oft-injured Dagestani has won all of his 23 pro fights, last finishing promotional newcomer Darrell Horcher by second-round TKO in April.
UFC 206 is scheduled for Dec. 10 at Air Canada Centre.
