Watch: Red Sox win slugfest after overturned call in 9th
It's somehow fitting that a game as nutty as Sunday afternoon's critical AL East showdown between the Boston Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays came down to a contested foul ball virtually obscured from the view of the cameras.
Trailing 11-8 in the ninth inning, Blue Jays catcher Russell Martin laced a ball to the right-field corner off Red Sox closer Craig Kimbrel that was initially ruled fair by first-base umpire Jim Joyce. That double would have put runners at second and third with just one out if it wasn't overturned and ruled a foul after a discussion by the umpires.
A lengthy replay review immediately followed at the behest of Blue Jays skipper John Gibbons, but that only confirmed the ball indeed struck the side wall before bouncing fair. Gibbons put up even more of a fight afterwards, but was eventually ejected for his troubles.
Boston held on to win by a 11-8 score in a game that featured a bizarre attempt to steal home, more record-setting heroics from David Ortiz, and 18 combined pitching changes between the two clubs. With the win, the Red Sox extended their AL East lead over both the Blue Jays and Baltimore Orioles to two games.
