Euro 2016 Debrief, Day 17: France survives as Germany, Belgium thrive

Reuters

Each matchday throughout Euro 2016, we'll provide you with a briefing of everything you need to know from France after the day's matches have concluded; highlights of the action, the most pressing news from the tournament, and, of course, a look ahead to the following day.

From the pitch

France 2, Ireland 1: Irish unravel in 2nd half, hosts clinch quarter-final berth

France, once again, was sloppy out of the blocks, conceding a second-minute penalty and looking nervy throughout the opening half against a game Ireland side. But talent ultimately won out, with Antoine Griezmann scoring twice in three minutes in the second half to ease French fears and send the host nation to the quarter-finals.

Germany 3, Slovakia 0: Draxler and Co. dominate en route to last 8

Note to everyone else in the tournament: Germany is done messing around. Arguably the most dominant display of the competition thus far saw Julian Draxler steal the show and Jerome Boateng score a blinder.

Belgium 4, Hungary 0: Hazard stars as Red Devils blow underdog away

There were some threatening moments from the Hungarians, particularly when Belgium was up 1-0, but Eden Hazard and Kevin De Bruyne eventually took over, and a trio of second-half goals saw the Red Devils blow Gabor Kiraly and company away.
