He was with his father.

On Friday, the Texas Rangers called up Bush, 12 years after he was selected first overall by the San Diego Padres in the 2004 draft. After a stint in prison, and a life derailed by alcohol abuse, he signed a free-agent deal in December, and hasn't looked back since.

"Brian Shouse, our pitching coach in Frisco, knocked on the door in my hotel room," he told reporters. "Me and my dad were a little confused who's knocking at the door, but once Shousey said who it was, I had a good feeling of what was gonna happen. I didn't know it was gonna be majors, but it's extremely exciting.

"I just felt like jumping up and down, just thinking about how hard I've been working lately and just following the course. Altogether, it's unbelievable and hard to explain."

When he was drafted, Bush was a shortstop. But after he couldn't figure it out with the bat, his prized arm couldn't go to waste. At the time, he was throwing 95 mph, and now he's up near 100 mph.

So far this season he owns a 2.65 ERA in 12 games at Double-A Frisco.
