An under-the-radar 10-day contract signing for the Los Angeles Clippers could end up bringing tremendous value to the team down the road.

Center Jeff Ayres was recently picked up by the Clippers to fill their open roster spot after Josh Smith was sent back to the Houston Rockets for cash considerations.

Prior to their road game against the Toronto Raptors on Sunday, head coach Doc Rivers discussed the reasoning behind bringing the 6-foot-10 big aboard.

"We just really wanted the San Antonio scouting reports," Rivers said, according to CBS Sports' James Herbert.

Ayres spent the last two seasons suiting up for the Spurs, averaging three points and three rebounds as a reserve, while also winning an NBA championship with the franchise in 2014. He had been competing for the D-League's Idaho Stampede prior to being signed by the Clippers.

Rivers was clearly being a tad sarcastic in his assessment of the Ayres signing, but with San Antonio leading the Clippers by 9.5 games in the standings, any intel he can provide would be most appreciated.
