Timberwolves' Pekovic won't play in preseason; Rubio getting closer to return

Minnesota Timberwolves fans will have to wait a while longer before they catch sight of center Nikola Pekovic on the hardcourt.

Pekovic, who underwent surgery on his right Achilles in April, is not expected to suit up in preseason.

Injuries have forced the burly Pekovic to miss 79 games over the last two seasons. To his credit, Pekovic has been productive in whatever time he's seen on the court, as he has averaged 15.6 points and 8.3 rebounds per game across 85 appearances since the 2013-14 season.

The Timberwolves, however, have plenty of depth in the frontcourt to replace Pekovic's vacated minutes. For one, No. 1 selection Karl-Anthony Towns could stand to gather more reps. Gorgui Dieng, Adreian Payne, and Kevin Garnett could also see time at center during Pekovic's absence.

Meanwhile, the cheerier news out of Minnesota is the improving health of point guard Ricky Rubio, who was held to only 22 appearances last season due to battles with ankle injuries.

Interim head coach Sam Mitchell said Rubio was "getting there," in his recovery, although a firm return date is not yet known.

Rubio was expected to be fully healthy in time for training camp, which opens next Monday.

The 24-year-old has been mentioned in some trade rumors this summer, but both Rubio and the Timberwolves remain staunchly committed to one another.

When healthy, Rubio is one of the league's best passers and defenders at his position. The Spaniard averaged 10.3 points, 8.8 assists, and 1.7 steals per game last season.
