VIDEOS: Top 5 MLB plays of the year
There's a little less than two months before pitchers and catchers report to spring training for a highly anticipated 2015 campaign. The upcoming year will feature no shortage of new faces in new places, thanks to a historically active offseason.
But while it's tempting to look ahead toward a new year and a clean slate, it's also important to turn back and remember some of baseball's best moments.
Behold, the top plays from the 2014 campaign:
Honorable Mentions
Bumgarner does it all
"And how do you celebrate? You blow a snot rocket."
World Series Champion. World Series Most Valuable Player. Sports Illustrated's Sportsman of the Year. It's safe to say 2014 was a memorable year for San Francisco Giants ace Madison Bumgarner. He also blasted four home runs, including this grand slam in April.
Rajai Davis belts walk-off grand slam
"A stunning, and I mean stunning comeback win for the Tigers."
Down by three runs with one out in the ninth inning, the Detroit Tigers received a walk-off home run from the unlikeliest of heroes in June. Rajai Davis, who entered the game with 27 home runs in 2,640 career plate appearances, slapped a Sean Doolittle offering just over the left-field wall to beat the Oakland Athletics 5-4.
5. Tulo and LeMahieu combine for stellar double play
"Does not get any prettier than that double play."
Colorado Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki was limited to 91 games last season due to injuries. But when he was healthy, he and second baseman DJ LeMahieu were combining to make ridiculous plays, like this one they pulled off in July.
4: Andrelton Simmons, Gold Glover
"That outta get people out of their seats, my goodness"
The list of things Atlanta Braves shortstop Andrelton Simmons can do defensively continues to grow, and he added contortionist to his repertoire last season.
Simmons got caught going the other way trying to cover second base on a hit and run. Yet, somehow, he managed to go across his body to snag the ball before reaching over to tag the bag for the force out.
3: Cespedes's laser beam
"That's the most remarkable throw you'll ever see."
It's as if former Oakland Athletics outfielder Yoenis Cespedes botched the initial play on purpose to show off his cannon and gun Howie Kendrick out at the plate.
2: Souza saves Zimermann's no-no
"He's got it. He's got it. It's a no hitter for Jordan Zimmermann."
Washington Nationals rookie Steven Souza Jr. may have made the biggest play of his major-league career in late September, in just his 21st major-league game. The left-fielder, who came on as a defensive replacement, made a phenomenal catch to give pitcher Jordan Zimmermann the first no-hitter in franchise history.
Zimmermann showed his appreciation by giving the rookie a Best Buy gift card, while the Nationals showed their appreciation by trading Souza to the Tampa Bay Rays.
1: Jeter goes out in style
"Derek Jeter, where fantasy becomes reality."
New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter capped off his Hall of Fame career with a Hollywood ending. The 14-time All-Star slapped a walk-off single in his final at-bat at Yankee Stadium to give New York a 6-5 win over the Baltimore Orioles.
Misplay of the year
"Three runs in... on a wild pitch."
In a bases-loaded jam in the third inning, all Colorado Rockies left-hander Christian Friedrich had to do was retire Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Wily Peralta to end the inning and the threat. Instead, Friedrich uncorked a wild pitch that resulted in the bases clearing.
