USA Basketball: Contractual situation comment was about Kevin Love, not Kevin Durant

Jesse Johnson / USA Today Sports

USA Basketball managing director Jerry Colangelo made waves on Thursday when he said that Kevin Durant didn't really have a choice in pulling out of camp and the FIBA World Cup later this month, citing a contractual situation.

Colangelo's words may have been misinterpreted, though, and USA Basketball reached out to CBS Sports to clarify, saying that those comments were actually about Kevin Love, not Durant.

That would certainly make more sense. While Durant very well could have pulled out for some contractual matter, it's unclear why Under Armour's substantial 10-year offer would be impacted a great deal if Durant were to suffer an injury this summer (you can actually make a case that a return from injury is great marketing fodder).

Love, meanwhile, pulled out of consideration for the team and has a pretty clear contractual "situation." Not only is Love the subject of trade rumors - rumors that are reportedly fact, they just can't be put into action yet - he also has an opt-out looming next summer, after which he'll be looking to sign a maximum contract.

Maybe Colangelo misspoke, or the quote was poorly relayed, or this is some backtracking. In any case, Durant and Love aren't on the team and they have their reasons. Let's move on.
